'Highly complex endeavor': Northeastern University plans to reopen for classes, students in fall
BOSTON —
At least one Boston university says it is planning to reopen classes and residence halls to students in the fall.

Northeastern University's president made the announcement Friday via a letter to the school community.

“It is our intention to reopen our campuses this fall and offer on-site instruction and a residential experience for our students,” President Joseph E. Aoun wrote.

The school moved to all-remote activities in March after the COVID-19 outbreak began in Massachusetts.

Aoun called reopening the campus a “highly complex endeavor.”

“It will require new and innovative thinking about classroom usage, residential occupancy, dining, athletics, student activities, and other elements of campus life,” he wrote. “Rest assured that every aspect of how the university operates is being evaluated in the context of our new reality.”

In addition to other, still developing safety and social distancing measures, the university plans to offer some lectures in both live and recorded formats and some classes with both live and remote participation.

The university will also adjust its campus residence options.

“We will need to expand student housing into new buildings and communities to reduce residential density,” Aoun wrote. “This may include setting aside residential space to accommodate those who will need to safely self-isolate.”

The school plans to release a more detailed plan for the fall semester in the coming days. Northeastern said all the changes and reopening timelines will be in accordance with public health guidelines and recommendations.

Other Boston schools have not released plans for the fall.

"A fall 2020 return to a residential campus operation is the goal; all planning efforts to that end are being made in consultation with the Medical Advisory Group that has been established by the university," Boston University President Robert Brown said.

I live in Montgomery County, probably the last County to open along with Philly, and I've been getting some information that we may be open between May 28 and June 1. Not sure how the powers that be are predicting that given that we haven't even come close to meeting Wolf's criteria for reopening, but the courts are citing June 1 as the time they will start reopening.

I heard June 4th for Philly. SEPTA resumes regular service on May 17th. So all routes should be running save for some suburban routes that are still reduced and some other routes to Center City/West Philly that are closed. But that means no more free rides. There have been complaints of homeless using the buses to sleep.

Regular buses are 20 passengers and those buses with the slinky in the middle are 30 passengers. Most of the el stops are still not running.

Masks are highly recommended. But after that video with the guy dogpiled by police I think they realised they couldn't really enforce it.

Has anyone checked in from Maine yet? We had some restrictions lifted statewide, and we're starting a "rural reopening" -- a few counties that had almost no (like fewer than 10) confirmed cases (though they were only testing healthcare workers, nursing home patients and people in the hospital until recently) are going to be allowed to have dine-in service soon, gyms open, etc. Still no dental appointments though!

It's probably a necessary thing because these areas are on the verge of total economic death anyway, but god it's fucking retarded how people conceptualize borders as impenetrable around here... If rural restaurants reopen, people from cities will visit. If they visit, maybe they bring the coof. Hardly anyone around here complies with masking orders because that makes you a pussy. We have the most elderly people of any state and our rural hospitals are notoriously terrible and have low capacity.

Should be interesting...

Wisconsin, USA

(Crosspost from the megathread)
Wisconsin is open for business, by state supreme court decree, 4-3.

MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL said:
The Wisconsin Supreme Court has struck down Gov. Tony Evers' order shutting down daily life to limit the spread of coronavirus — marking the first time a statewide order of its kind has been knocked down by a court of last resort.

The state's highest court sided with Republican lawmakers Wednesday in a decision that curbed Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' power to act unilaterally during public health emergencies...

Republicans who brought the lawsuit had asked the justices to side with them but to stay their ruling for about a week so legislators and Evers could work out a new plan to deal with the pandemic. The justices declined to do that and had their ruling take effect immediately.

To put any limits in place, the Democratic governor and Republican-controlled Legislature will be forced to work together to deal with the ebbs and flows of the outbreak — something the two sides have rarely been able to achieve before.

With no COVID-19 policies in place, bars, restaurants and concert halls are allowed to reopen — unless local officials implement their own restrictions. That raises the prospect of a patchwork of policies, with rules varying significantly from one county to the next.

It remains to be seen whether the Governor and legislature will compromise on any replacement shutdown orders/ reopening plan.

Time for me to bitch about the small island I am currently at, the Med Island of Malta, and one of the dumbest things to come around from the lockdown lifting.

So as of a few weeks ago, the government decided to start lifting their not-lockdown restrictions. Officially, not under lockdown, could go out but nothing was open. During this time only pharmacies and supermarkets were open, no restrictions on entering them, that was up to the individual supermarket.

Now things have started to open things up, basically all shops, offices and next week restaurants, all with severe limits on how many people they can have in and etc. The government also decided that now wearing face masks are mandatory to enter all shops (including pharmacies and supermarkets, which were not required during lockdown), and that anyone not wearing a mask is to be denied entry into the shop.

This has lead to the following problems. Firstly, there are no fucking masks to buy. If you don't have a mask and you want to go to the pharmacy to buy one, too bad, you don't have a mask, you cannot go in to purchase one. Secondly, price hiking on masks shot up. It now costs 2 to 3 euros for ONE poorly made-in-China mask that breaks after a single use. This has led to both an outcry and worry amongst people that they will be denied entry into a necessary shop (groceries, ironmongery etc).

As a result, the government has decided to take a leaf out of the command market book and cap the price of masks at around 80 Euro cents. Pharmacies, having purchased these masks for more than that, are operating at a loss and have decided in protest to stop selling masks altogether.

In other words, we have a poorly conceived law whereas shops are meant to reject people not wearing masks from entering, risking a fine if they are caught not doing so/having too many mask less people in it, on an island where no where is selling masks because doing so means you are selling at a loss. As a result, everyone keeps what masks they have and reuse them, only pulling them out before entering a shop and removing them after leaving it. It's fucking stupid.

Otherwise, the opening up is going well, people are going about and using facilities and starting to put money into previously closed shops, though the true test, the opening of the airports and kickstating the tourism industry and the effects of that isn't happening til an undecided date, possibly November to next year.

We have the most elderly people of any state and our rural hospitals are notoriously terrible and have low capacity.

This is what's happening in my state. People are losing their businesses/jobs/careers, but can drive 20 minutes in any direction and end up somewhere where none of the restrictions exist that are destroying their lives. Speaking from experience, I've traveled out the affected county for work and saw people who were doing the same, so yes, it's driving people out. How many? Big enough to make a difference in case count? I'm unsure.

Granted, the county in question is making strides to rejoin the rest of the state, but it also has a history of extending these lockdowns at the last minute. If it happens again, I expect there to be a backlash.

The economic effects of WuFlu are pretty goddamn terrible lmao. I just popped off my titter feed and the amount of people squalling about how muh capitalism is killing us is pretty pathetic lol. Like bitch you think capitalism is what causes people to be destitute? You think your commie utopia would let you sit on your ass all day and play videogames? You think there wouldn't be people forced out of their apartments if capitalism don't real?

We need to open up all nations and places and force people off welfare and back to work. I want to do it because it'll make the titter commies scream. I don't care how many people die. The last time we had a worldwide economic depression it helped contribute to a world war. These fatasses need their fucking noses ground up against that. If you don't want another Hitler than stop creating the conditions for another Hitler.

Oh well at least if there's a world war we can make up for economic shortfalls by making weapons and such. Wars are very profitable.

Just received word that Philadelphia trials are suspended through September 8th. Not sure what that will mean as far as lockdown, since lockdown for red counties in PA still hasn't been pushed back further than June 4th.

A college I'm looking to enter this fall for graduate school hasn't, thus far, cancelled its classes for fall, but the chancellor states that there will be a mix of both in-person and online classes. If they force all my classes to go virtual, I may be able to work in the area at a local school and attend graduate school, which would otherwise be impossible as I currently live some distance away and they have never offered any online courses for my intended area of study before. Not only are they looking at virtual classes for the fall semester: they're planning to reformat the spring semester too. But yes, it's remaining open.

I've got a couple friends on staff at a local private college. One is convinced they're going to be completely online this fall, but the other, who works in a more operational role, says he's attending meetings to restructure the hallways for one-way student traffic, so he expects at least some classes to continue.

My alma matter (another private college) has announced that they're expecting to hold on-campus classes as usual, starting in August. They tend to take a very "the Lord will protect us" tone, but I also know they're in deep financial trouble, and probably can't survive a slimmed-down semester.
