This better not blue ball us like the damn dam did.
I'd rather have the nuke plant blueball us. That's just what we need, a fuckup that global media will use to scare the normies into thinking there's no such thing as safe, reliable nuclear power and we need low energy "green" renewables as our only power source

hoh great another nation fucking up nuclear so the rest of the world can remain afraid of it and force us into stupid "renewable energies" like fucking windmill and solar.
This is the most depressing part.

Nuclear when done right is the biggest "clean" and environmentally safe power source out there. So many reactors are old and aren't using the newest safety designs/tech that basically make them foolproof outside acts of god.

Stuff like Thorium and miniaturization could be an awesome future. Yet, the big environmentalist lobby are scared shitless it'll be like setting off a warhead in their backyard.

Nah. A lot of the environmentalists are motivated by the same thing most political actors are: the grift.

Green energy is big, endless money for some of their corporate pals, as well as their consultancies.

Thing with nuclear is, it’s more expensive than coal, renewables and the current cheapest option of natural gas. It also has a 50 year depreciation schedule which leads to a lack of flexibility compared to 30 year NG plants or 20 year solar plants.

Sounds to me like they are in a xenon pit. Too much xenon (the noble gas in question) poisons the reaction and it needs to either try to burn it up, which is destabilizing and was part of the sequence of errors that caused Chernobyl, or much safer is to shut the whole shebang down until the xenon isotopes decay in a day or two and the reactor can be restarted again.

This is all assuming the story being told IS the actual story.

*edit* oops! @Drain Todger was already all over this. Welp, so now TWO autists from the farm have validated the science, so it must be right!
What's bad is when they decide to pull out a bunch of control rods to bring the power back up, the xenon burns off, and suddenly, the reactor is producing much, much more power than they expected, to the point that the core turns into lava. Modern reactors have very sturdy containment to prevent the fuel from melting through the building when this happens.

Apparently, some fuel rods in the reactor are compromised. It's probably not the fault of the reactor at all, but of improper processing and cladding techniques in producing the fuel. They're just going to keep running it. They have no choice. They're already at capacity and if they shut it down, there will be outages.

One of China's top nuclear scientists and the Vice-President of Harbin Engineering University has died after falling from a building.

Zhang Zhijian, who was the Vice-President of the Chinese Nuclear Society was found dead on Thursday.

South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the university in the capital of Heilongjiang said that police had ruled out homicide as the cause of death after on-site investigations failed to provide further details.

"Harbin Engineering University announces with deep grief that Professor Zhang Zhijian regrettably fell off a building and died at 9.34 am on June 17, 2021," the statement read. "The university expresses deep sorrow over the passing of comrade Zhang Zhijian and deep condolences to his family."

Fell off a building? That's a funny way of saying he jumped.

That's not a particularly good sign, I'd say.

Normally I'd say this is pretty harmless, and in european reactors (as in, operated in Europe by Europeans, and I guess it applies to western reactors in general) it would be harmless. In fact, it most likely wouldn't have happened to this degree in the first place, but hey, this is China we're talking about, and China Numbah Wan when it comes to fucking shit up.
Nuclear power and chinese society are incompatible. People are educated in a strict repetitive fashion with zero emphasis on critical and independent thinking. If something hasn't been covered by the lecture explicitly, it's too hard.
Society is structured around hierarchies and authority to an intense degree, and there's the whole "saving face" thing going on. If they make a mistake or don't understand something, they will never admit it until it's too late. I had several chinese students here, and they all sucked because that's a universal behavioural pattern.
That's fine in normal industry where they just lose a bit of money, but when it comes to fucking NPPs where mistakes can be REALLY dangerous, it just doesn't fly.
Some menial worker who doesn't really know what he's doing beyond the exact hand-movements he needs to perform fucks up the handling on a fuel rod.
Doesn't tell anyone because saving face. Someone else notices, doesn't tell anyone, saving face. Shit works for a while, but it gets worse. Xenon builds up, but nobody wants to be responsible for having to shut down the entire reactor that is still practically brand new, so shit gets worse and worse.

Nuclear power is one of the safest ways to produce energy, if done responsibly and carefully. The safety engineering would be off the charts if the safety engineers wouldn't be so anal about extending the charts because they understand that in order to make it safe it needs work and care. But it's never enough for the goddamn chinkdrones. You simply can't engineer anything to be so idiot-proof that it withstands the combined might of a billion mindless Chinese. Even if it were a hardened blackbox system they'd find a way to fuck it up because they're THAT RETARDED.
It's a miracle they haven't blown themselves up yet, although I think that "miracle" is a combination of "absolutely bonkers safety engineering done by responsible people" and "any shit that still happened was buried by MiniTru".

Instead, they're just venting xenon, and because they're cheap fucks, they probably won't do fuck-all to replace the fuel. Shutting down and refueling a reactor is a very lengthy process.

What's that Chinese word for "Good enough"?

Google "china menaced by exploding" and realize that there's nothing in this world that the Chinese can't make explode.

Yep. You could order 1000 solid plastic widgets from China and get a call a month later from the plant manager telling you "So solly, filst batch exprode."
