I went to Catholic school from K-12 and still am Catholic, and I was always taught that the many breakthroughs humanity has achieved in medicine, science, etc actually glorify God and can be seen as miracles. There's also the saying "God helps those who help themselves."

I think the story of The Drowning Man is appropriate here:
