Crank Calls? -

Has anyone ever made a crank call? If so why did you do it? What function did it serve?


I have known people who have made crank calls through phones and facebook.

Me and my friend did it in middle school to this dude I had a crush on. She found his number in the phone book and we used *67 to call without leaving my phone number on his caller ID. And then we asked 'Is your refrigerator running". That was literally it.

We were gonna call again except the second time, my friend forgot to use *67 and he found out it was from MY phone number. Then he thought I was a stalker for the rest of the school year and never forgave me.

If you're reading this dude, I swear it was her idea.

It's fun to call up customer support lines and be as stupid and ignorant as possible. Just waste a good hour trying to find the power switch.

I really only do this to people that deserve it. Mostly just fake anti-virus companies trying to scam their customers. It's fucking hilarious for them to scramble and be like "oh uhhh i dunno how to solve problem" when I tell them the worst possible malware scenario I can possibly think of.

Back when I was a stupid kid, sure.

Buddy of mine would call up various people doing a squeaky short bus voice like 'HEH WOAH MY NAMES MYKEE HEH WOAH" similar to Crank Yankers, but many years previous to the show. One time he called that teacher we all hated and it was really funny.

During lunch I'd use the payphone at school to call toll free customer service and ordering numbers and fuck with them, and I'd call whatever 1800 [seven letter lewdthing] we could come up with. One time I found one that was like, 1800 ASS FUCK or something and it was a customer support line, I was like "oh did you know your number is one eight hundred ass fuck". They were kinda rude so I called them back a few hundred more times over the next few weeks, just saying "ONE EIGHT HUNDRED ASS FUCK HAHAHAHAHA" and hanging up and calling right back. Eventually they put in an automated switchboard.
Another one was like "1800 gay dick" and it was a recording about "Jesus loves you. Jesus knows what number you called. Jesus knows what the number spells. Jesus wants you to get help."

Years ago, I remember when I slept over a friend's house we just called random numbers, and got this guy's answering machine. So we left these messages that sounded like phone sex ads and gave the phone numbers of two girls we didn't like.

During my first few weeks at boarding school they were a bit of a craze. There's a service called 118 118 you can call and they'll put you through to pretty much anywhere so we used to call up as a variety of characters. I myself remember calling up as an Australian who'd attempted to use super-glue as lube.

Someone used my phone to prank call a sex-chat line and after that I kept getting texts from them, including one time when my Mum caught sight of one of their messages and demanded an explanation. It was rather awkward

The whole thing came crashing down when three idiots got hold of a guy's phone and called one of the girls in his contacts. They left a voicemail asking "How big are your tits?", and then left the name of the guy who's phone they'd nicked. The girl's Dad got the message before she did and (rightfully) freaked out. The police nearly got involved and the guy who's phone they used got in a load of trouble even though he hadn't done anything. We realised things had gone too far at that point.
