It's got nothing to do with irony. Bronies are a New Sincerity thing. We genuinely like the show for its appeal, not because it's ironic to like a kids' show. Cultural irony is for hipsters. Also, haters conveniently overlook the fact that FiM's creator openly stated that the show is for adults to enjoy as well, hence all the sneaky shout-outs (Star Wars, The Big Lebowski, Doctor Who etc.) and even the odd adult joke woven into the stories.
