TDLR thousands of people that are way too invested in other peoples dnd game raise, at the time of writing, over 2 million dollars to animate a movie based around these characters.

How much does something like this cost? Will we end up with some cheaply animated chinese cartoon and REEEEing after the project is mismanaged, or will it go full Chelsea von Valkenburg?
With the original goal 74% of 750k was going to be spent on animation for a 22 minute special so the price is apparently 555,000. And since its Titmouse thats animating it should look decent at least.

It's autistic to raise that much money for what's going to be a cheaply animated ten minute short, but Critical Role is pretty chill. Matthew Mercer is a great DM.
Its actually going to be a 44 minute animated special, 88 minutes if they hit all of their goals which they almost certainly will.

Watching other people play D&D seems like the saddest, loneliest thing ever.

I hope none of these funders complain about not being paid enough or about student loans when they're funding dumb shit like this. Because this is a dumbass thing to spend money on.

I treat stuff like podcasts and streams like talk radio. They're fun to listen to on your commute or while you do chores around the house. I have no doubt many sad autists to spergy to get involved in DnD listen to it, but normal people do too. A friend of mine really loves some DnD podcast, I'm guessing this one, and kept trying to get me to listen to it. He's just a normal guy who listened to it in the car and thought it was fun and new since he never played DnD as a kid.

It's actually pretty entertaining for quite a while since the people involved are really likeable and they do a great job of breathing life into their characters. In a way, it's less like a DnD game and more like an unscripted radio play.

That being said:

A hundred percent this. I don't mind people supporting what they love, but anyone spending money on frivolities loses their right to complain about how hard it is to make ends meet.
Don't mind if people have the dispensable income, though.

lots, not most, but lots of the fanbase for critical role is 30-40 year old wealthy people surprisingly, its not uncommon to see Many 10k donations when they do charity and stuff. most of the spergs left after a gay character died and they flipped out

Good for them. They took what was meant to be a one-time thing as a birthday present among friends and spun it off into a business revolving around an IP they were smart enough to retain ownership of. If something I created got that popular I'd want to do cool things with it supported by people who love it too.

I thought this was for cartoon series from the early 80s.
Where a group of kids get on a ride in a amusement park. Then they get teleported to another dimension with dragons, wizards and shit

But the series was canceled and the kids never went home.
So, I thought this kickstarter was for that last episode or episodes where the kids eventually go home
And I loved that show when I was a kid and to this day I still wonder how those kids are doing.

and for this DnD kickstarter, I don't care for it

Glad I couldn't help

Have you played, read or watched any Dragonlance dnd stuff before? What about record of the lodoss war? Because they both started out as dnd campaigns before becoming bigger things.

I was baiting just a bit with my post, but it's in a sense to me like sitting on the couch watching someone else play video games. I know that Dragonlance and most campaign settings for that matter aren't born out of thin air.

Critical Role was a big deal in my DnD circles over the past few years, I met a lot of people who got into the hobby because of it. I'd say this project has a chance of being decent because most of the people involved are already in show business in some form, with all of the players being big shot voice actors I think it'll turn out fine. It does take a certain level of :autism: to be a true fan though, I can't imagine watching a four hour DnD session on the outside every week for three years.
