Cult games you enjoy -

The Hansome Goblin

Maybe there's a thread somewhere about this, but I ain't investing more time here for that.

Anyways, what are some games that few people seem to know about that you either enjoy or have some fond memories of? I don't mean little known side games in a marquee franchise like Assassins' Creed or MGS exclusive PS Vita games or anything like that. I'm asking about games that might have a devoted following but are unlikely to have retrospective blog posts written about them.

For me, one of the first ones I can think of is Body Harvest, created by the same folks responsible for Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto (DMA Design). I've read sqat-all when it comes to retrospectives on this game, save for this one article on HardcoreGaming101.net. To avoid getting to detailed into it right now, it's this time-traveling, third-person action game where you fight giant alien insects, largely using a variety of vehicles to make your way through what at least for that time (1998) was a massively expansive world with a total of five different time periods. There are also some minor adventure game elements that were apparently tacked on at the request of Nintendo, but they don't really add anything to the game. Totally horseshit story, but that's okay as the combat's adequate enough to make up for it.

Another one that comes to mind is the Summoner series, developed by the, wait for it, Volition, much better known for Saints' Row and Red Faction. Not really that profitable for them I guess, and not every part of the game was brilliant (the dialogue in particular felt clipped to the point of blatant shittiness) but the worldbuilding was something else. The gameplay wasn't half-bad either. I've only really played the first one, but it sort of displays both elements of adventure game-esque "put objects here to watch this thing happen" and combat you could say is a more simplistic version of the party-based mechanics of both WRPGs.

EDIT: I do see an obscure games thread, but that's not quite what I was trying to talk about. But I guess they do largely cover the same ground.

Well there’s the King’s Field games. Made by the same company that created the Souls series.

They take some getting used to, but the amount of atmosphere and exploration is amazing.

The first Silent Hill is about a cult that's trying to give birth to a demon-God, it's pretty good but probably outdated by now. The new Far Cry is about a doomsday cult and it's worth playing if you like FPS games.

Those are the only two cult games I can think of off the top of my head but if I think of more I'll let you know.

I think they mean games with a cult following; a game that's not very popular or successful (bonus if it financially flopped) but immediately or eventually gained a surge of dedicated followers.

There's examples of media that gained a cult following that was/still is hugely popular and may have winded down but still has a cult following (e.g. Evil Dead series).

Anyway my favorite cult game is the first Elder Scrolls game, Arena.

First series From Software ever made and one that could use some love again, especially after Dark Souls had shit like Seath, a one eyed black dragon, and the moonlight sword. On that same note, Armored Core could be up there but than again it may not really be enough of a cult following. Shadow Tower on the other hand was one I enjoyed yet the game never did well. It's pretty much King's Field if you put in the decay rate Dark Souls 2 had along with the lack of any music outside of cutscenes.

Blood for DOS. It has a cult following and it has a cult in it. There's BloodGDX for Blood, if you want to play it on newer systems.
Blood definitely. Best of the Build engine games yet was given a rather mediocre sequel. Another cult game from Monolith was Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. Monolith made an FPS that took anime elements, giant robots included. It felt like FEAR in that you're very fragile as are your enemies only without a ghost girl in red or bullet time.

Deadly Premonition is another I can list. Anyone that doesn't know what it is: more or less a game where you play as an FBI agent who fights monsters in a RE-4 like shooting mechanic. Sort of like Twin Peaks in terms of setting where you got a quiet town beset with a horrible murder, complete with a red room. Fun fact: before the game was released, the red room of the game had midgets rather than two little boys.
