So, to hop onto the train of "X on Tumblr" format threads, I dove into the tags for a rather popular tumblr lolcow obsession. Buckle up you shitlords and shitladies, because we're taking a drive through "cultural appropriation" as tumblr sees it. Basically when they complain about CA its complaints about "white liberals" driven by ethnic nationalism + the concept of intellectual property on steroids, passed off as something that liberals, socialists, and other leftists should be on the side of SJWs on, because /sarcasm/ you'd be totally racist otherwise. /endsarcasm/

Call me an SJW, but I can see how it would be offensive if someone wore a straight-up lehenga to prom without understanding the cultural significance. But a generic two piece dress? No.

Sadly those are real, the language ones at least, the first one of them came from a blog who's main focus was linguistics and the other came from a 100% bonafide tumblr SJW, complete with "down with cis" rhetoric on their blog.

This one hits home to me because of how it affects me. I am a white American male, and my wife is Haitian. One of the most important Haitian traditions for New Years Eve is to make pumpkin soup (traditional Haitian meal) to celebrate Haitian independence on January 1. This past December 31, instead of partying until midnight, I stayed up with her preparing the traditional soup. She said that it meant so much to her that I was adopting aspects of her culture and traditions. According to the Tumblristas, I was a no-good white devil robbing a poor woman of color of her culture.

The Tumblr crowd also tends to think of culture as something fixed, discrete, and unchanging, when real life culture is anything but. I feel that this is a ridiculous over-correction to cultural appropriation which is mocking or insensitive rather than respectful. For example, take the Indian mascot controversy in American sports. While Chief Wahoo is obviously offensive, the FSU Seminoles picked that mascot because the Seminoles were one of the few Indian tribes to resist Indian Removal in the 1830s and they have the full backing of the Seminole Tribe.

What pisses me off in this particular case is the fact that they have to mash all of the people with darker skin together, and slap the "brown girls/guys/whatever" label on them regardless of their ethnicity (Indian, Vietnamese, Carribean, Puerto Rican, etc.).

I made a post about one of the nastiest- if not the nastiest- cases of ~cultural appropriation~ hysteria I've ever seen in the general SJW thread. It's long so I'm just going to link it instead of reposting it. If you want a summary though, basically an organization paints henna designs on the heads of cancer-stricken women who have undergone chemotherapy as a way to make them feel beautiful and feminine again. Unfortunately, most of the organization and patients are WHITE PPL so clearly they're evil and marketing off the oppression of POC of color.

Some gems include "I don't care if these poor white women are suffering from cancer and will die," "Cancer, chronic illness, disability, none of that is an excuse," "Cancer ain't no excuse for this bullshit," and "These women have privilege. White women - even and ESPECIALLY cancer patients, the sick, suffering and dying white women are immensely privileged over Indians in the same situation."

It's okay, I got a rage headache reading that, too.

If you live in a country like the united states that's a blend of world cultures, obviously each culture present in the country will be experiencing tidbits of other cultures and stuff. It's just globalism, it's not teh ebil whyt man trying to steal people's culture.
