Cultural Appropriation on Tumblr - REEEE HANDS OFF WHITEY

I've honestly never heard anyone celebrate white people wearing dreadlocks without being immediately dragged through the mud. Nor have I heard people who think dreads are filthy conveniently make exceptions for white people. Is this actually a thing that happens?

I've never seen it. Everybody I've heard complaining about filthy dreads almost exclusively says it about white people with dreads, regardless of their position on whether or not dreads are cultural appropriation. I have never actually witnessed anybody saying that about black dreads even once in my life.

Maybe because some hair textures look terrible with dreads? Straight, fine, hair usually looks really weird and gross when it's forced to form locs.

People on Tumblr really like to exaggerate what cultural appropriation really is. In their terms, it's basically doing literally anything from another culture. That makes me incredibly depressed, because it feels like we went right back to stage 1. People should embrace cultures and become closer by sharing what they have brought into the world, not segregate each other. These people are pretty much encouraging segregation.

The Celts may not have, but the Ancient Greeks did, and they were sure as hell white.

As a matter of fact, the modern revival of dreadlocks with black people is associated with Rastafarianism, which takes that hairstyle from a particular interpretation of the Hebrew Nazirite oath. Dreadlocks were a religious symbol in several non-black cultures centuries before Rasta fashion was in vogue, but you'll never hear a peep about those damn dirty cultural-appropriating blacks.

Neither can they "own" a dress style. The Indian-chief headdress might have a significant meaning to natives, and it is certainly within their rights to venerate it. What they have no right to do is sanctioning or forbidding non-native people using the headdress for their own purpose, to derive a new artistic form and a new meaning from it. The color yellow and the dragon motif have long been exclusive to Chinese royalty; any non-royal person owning such a garment was punishable by death. Nowadays no Chinese person will bat an eyelash if someone (Steven Seagal for example) wears a yellow robe with nine dragons on it (they may still snicker at you for your bad taste though).

And how about "appropiation" of illicit substances? The same whiteie who condemns others for wearing the chief headdress will not hesitate smoking shooms and peyote.

These people also never really think about how some countries' economy rely heavily on tourism/cultural exchanges- white/rich american/europeans who visit this one country because of its culture and the historical places. Now add this dumb "if you travel to another country YOU'RE racist!!!" mentality onto white-guilt folks and the economy of this third world country plummets.

Though knowing tumblr they'll also say it's whitey's fault the fact that that third world country went poor.

Those first two posts sound particularly fucking stupid to me. I was certain that people in the real world like it when you speak their language because you're making an effort to communicate with them, but apparently not because it completely destroys their culture.

Also I like how the second's highlighting Asian languages specifically when a large percentage of the Tumblr population are raging weeaboos.

It's odd how they think that everyone hated their hair and music all the time when there were people who admired them for it. (Even mainstream media.) I've come across people who've laughed at white rappers and/or whites that wear cornrows/dreads.

The article talks about how if you currently pass as a white American, your cultural oppression is no longer valid so POCs can celebrate St. Patrick's Day and its not appropriation. A day which the article points out is a culturally desecrated holy day for some then forgets to discredit later outside of "they're white, so nah".

From the very end of the article:

I would love to see their explanation of Curry Haggis that comes from the South Asian immigrant communities adaptation of a indigenous Scottish dish. Would they condemn white Scots for eating a hybrid dish that was based on their own traditional dish? Or would they say it was enriched by a proud POC immigrant community? I think we know the answer, but what is so infuriating about these sheltered first world children is sharing and taking bits of other cultures is normal for all cultures. Hell modern society would not exist as many other posters pointed out, but that does not matter to the Dogma of Social Justice Warriors. In the narrow view of the world segregation would comeback, but also if we do not take the time to learn about other cultures we set ourselves up for atrocities to take place. Anytime any group on this planet puts emphasis on purity be it racial purity, religious purity, or ethnic purity very bad things happen. I really just wish these fucking idiots would drop off the planet.
