I personally like phonetic spelling in writing, but that may be because I like old newspaper comics a lot and they were written that way because a lot of readers weren't very literate. My caveat is that it has to be done well, and made clear when it's being used.
Reminded me they still print Snuffy Smith, that's chock full of that!

My first roommate freshman year of college was from Inner Mongolia, and she literally hung up a portrait of Genghis Khan in our room.

I also kind of agree in the sense that I really dislike the Generic Medieval Europe setting, not because I think it's offensive to my ancestors or anything, but because it smacks of lazy writing. Either really commit or be original.

Granted, here's a post from a Turkish guy who doesn't like the Mordor = Turkey thing.
I agree with that idea Mordor is Turkey as a Turk since I am very familiar with the book and movie. Sam try to save his friend under a crescent in mordor, characters implies dozens of times that is west-east issue, mordor on map very similar to Turkey, Rohan cavalry charge is the same as what happened in Ottoman siege of Vienna and lots of other things. Also writer himself was in ww1 and lost 3 friends,(check his biography) believing every British propaganda told to British soldiers(they were claiming we eat human flesh) furthermore after long allied bombardment some coasts of Turkey were exactly like Mordor(in real not so different from rest of continental Europe). It seems like he really believed that they were there to save western world from evil Turks. I respect the guy for his work, but in mind he is no different from Anders Behring Breivik the Oslo bomber or the Crusaders who were saving Constantinople by plundering it while it was still Christian. Scapegoat Turks are always there to blame

Did she kill or enslave all the Chinese she could see?

But seriously, if cultural appropriation is real, then nobody should having paper, book, guns, compass etc; hell even ice cream, cause all of these came from China thousands of years ago.

Cultural appropriation is okay if it's nonwhites using a white culture.

You got to love the hypocrites for who they are. I mean, these are mostly spoiled and privileged people who live in fancy homes and preach to the working class that only they know how the world is supposed to work and they should be in charge or else you're a reactionary and racists!

It kind of sucks because this weird historical revisionism really makes it so that interesting cross-cultural interactions of the past are completely ignored, like the vikings' fascination with the Arabs and their culture, though the Arabs thought they were simultaneously beautiful, but also disgusting, uncivilized and horrifying.

I love learning about ancient cultures clashing with one another and if there had been any interaction between the vikings and sub-Saharan Africans, that'd be really cool to learn about, but from what I can see, there were no black vikings, at least none from any sources that are scholarly and don't come across like grifters trying to make a buck by trying to play fast and loose with history. Meanwhile we have actual historical record of real-life black samurai Yasuke but not a single name of any black viking.

... I think a black viking would be a really cool concept to explore in historical fiction, though.

Now I'm imagining a blaxploitation film about a black viking. That shit would be awesome.

Sorry to necro this thread, and if this isn't the right thread for this I'll delete straight away--but there's some spicy drama going on regarding someone's interpretation of a Wendigo, and the responses are hella mixed to say the least.

This is their apology video: https://youtu.be/wW-KBzKWvrU

And this is the doll in question: https://youtu.be/83UTVfNk9No

What are you guys's take on this? I've seen some people claim that saying its name invites it over to possess you, but I wonder what would happen if multiple people said it at the same time in different susceptible locations? And there's also people saying two different things regarding 'how it looks', and how it either doesn't have a fixed appearance at all, or just 'doesn't look like a deer'.

(Edit to avoid double-posting: ) There's also this whole thing about how the wendigo was analogous to The White Man/Colonist and shit--it's just a fuckin' mess. Especially since any person on the internet can go 'i'm a native/part native and--' to up their validity points.
I guess they just don't like how they turned this monster they're scared of into a cutesy character that eats candy. Or it's smearing mythology/urban legends or something.

Wendigos aren't fucking real, these people just want more and more reasons why you can't look at the cool thing from another culture.

The idea of "white culture" is so crazy to me. It's such an American concept. Here in Central Europe, most of us wouldn't say "we're all white". Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Spain are countries with completely different cultures.
That's a result of the IngSoc WokeJus indoctrination by people who claim to be against racism, being racist and imprinting that form of racism onto kids. They're pulling that crap in Canada too.

It's kind of like how the 'woke' have treated "black culture" as a monolith, for the purposes of "unity" of a coalition in an "us vs. them" mentality of "Black" vs "White".

It's largely because most white Americans are mutts so it HAS to be " White culture". Almost nobody is purely of one ethnic origin here unless they're from one of the Native American tribes and even then not always. Maybe Arabs and devoutly religious Jews, too.

First, we imported shitty American food.

Then, we imported mediocre American media.

An now we're importing shitty American politics.
