Omg so trendy!

I made it just because I had some instant coffee, plus I figured throwing it on vanilla ice cream would be like a fancy affogatto. On ice cream was delicious.

Anyone else have opinions on the quarantine trendy drink?

I am going to try and make some today. Thanks for telling me about it. It looks like it needs way too much sugar for my taste, but I'll just treat it like a dessert and see where that gets me.

I made some earlier today, used a whisk at first but switched to a hand mixer to make it easier. I used Nescafe Gold Espresso since it was on hand, doing 2 tablespoon coffee, 2 tablespoon water, 1/2 teaspoon sugar. It was alright, will probably experiment with the concept, read briefly about matcha being used, might be the next attempt.

Curious how other instant coffees will taste, might go for Maxwell House French Vanilla instant coffee, for a much more dessert coffee. Ice cream sounds like it would be a nice balance and an easy way to make some plain vanilla something extra. If I do try anything notable, I may post the results.

Took me a second to figure out what you were talking about, but apparently it's that "frothy" coffee I keep seeing videos for.
I haven't tried it yet mostly because I don't have any instant coffee, and I'm not really a huge coffee drinker in general. I don't know why it's called frothy coffee, though. Stuff looks more like peanut butter to me.

Still, I'd be will to give it a try some time.

I made it. It was very concentrated but I enjoyed it. My suggestion is to use a small glass cup. I don't have one and so I felt the experience was slightly diminished. Looking at your creation is half the fun.

I haven't seen anyone call it frothy coffee, but if they're getting that result then they probably need to mix it longer.

Fun facts that no one asked for: this whipped coffee treat is popular in South Korea because a famous actor (can't remember his name) tried it and said it tasted like dalgona, which is a sugar sponge candy. IIRC whipped coffee originated in Macau.

For anyone wanting to substitute the instant coffee for matcha, you'll have to change the recipe unless you want matcha syrup. I tried making it and it did not fluff up at all, even with an electric mixer. I saw that other people were adding egg whites, so I tried that and cut back on the matcha powder and I was pleased. I used...
  • 1 tablespoon of matcha powder
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 egg whites or the aquafaba/liquid from a can of chickpeas
You can add more sugar if you don't like the bitterness of matcha. On my second attempt I used aquafaba since I recently watched the Binging with Babish episode that covered it's uses, and it tasted just as good. Or you could use the egg whites and then use the yolks for Vietnamese egg coffee. Oh, and I haven't tried this with the matcha version, but if you make too much dalgona you can store it in the freezer. It doesn't freeze, it just stays fluffy and cold.

Not gonna lie: Hadn't heard about this stuff before and thought the first three posts in this thread were advertisement bots for some expensive coffee thing.

I can't recommend it. It looked neat, but tasted like milk with too much sugar and coffee. I'll just make a milkshake if I ever get the desire to drink a cup of cold milk with a tablespoon each of instant coffee and sugar in it.

I came here to post a thread about this, just learned the recipe it's pretty good. The recipe I was shown:

2 tbsp hot water (not boiling, from the tap)
2 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp instant coffee

Whisk together for 5 minutes

Add to milk

French vanilla sounds like it'd be amazing, if you're into sweet stuff like that. Obviously the whole thing is sweet but I like the sort of raw, sharp flavor of the instant coffee.

This sounds interesting (and I assume tard cum is m..i.l.k lmao)

I got another coffee recipe, an instant mocha:

Any kinda of instant coffee
A packet of powdered hot chocolate (Swiss is the best, but Hershey is decent)
A dash of dry creamer

Then add hot coffee-making temperature water.

Quick and cheap

Does it need to be instant coffee?

I'd imagine so, it's kind of the point, it needs to dissolve in the water. You could consider it super ghetto espresso I guess but whisked in so little water it creates something the consistency almost of peanut butter. You then mix it into the milk to create a thickish coffee.

Never heard of this before. But since its like, totes required, I am gonna make some. I think I have some instant coffee in the back of the cabinet

*Edit*

Finished. Everything happened like the recipe said. Which was interesting.

It tastes like overly sugared instant coffee with a frothy texture.

I attempted to make it without instant coffee. It was a colossal failure.
No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to froth. I ended up with a syrupy mixture, which surprisingly, isn't bad.

So I supposed it worked out in the end.

FWIW with instant coffe it doesn't "froth" a lot like you're probably imagining, it creates a syrupy mixture as well. Informative to know that it works with reg coffee as well. Even with instant coffee you have to whisk it a lot, I imagine even more so with ground.

It didn't float all nicely like how I've seen it. I added a bit of cocoa as well, so it tasted mocha-y.
