So there are TV shows with a city as a character. the rainy days in frasier, the disgusting people in friends, all the coke in miami vice.
did any show destroy a city in your mind?
I think Frasier destroyed seattle. it was a beacon for degenerates who wanted to feel like a refined intelligent person in a refined city. just like frasier.
what do you think? why am i right? and what other cities had that faith?

I could never live in Albequerque after Breaking Bad.

I mean it's in the middle of the fucking desert, so already I don't want to, but also I don't want to get murdered by drug addicts.

Seattle was already like that, and became worse with time (Frasier wasn't exactly wearing a manbun but as a beard). Also, anybody who wants to be more like that character needs to reevaluate life. The whole point of that show is "on-paper smart person does stupid things for you to laugh at".

Ohh matt, we are talking about realy stupid people.... they think they will become smart by copying others..

The fact that you thought any big city is not rife with crime, corruption and shitty people until TV revealed it to you is honestly kind of precious.
crime is not often shown in non crime TV shows. corruption is almost never shown, thats to risky.
those shows act like a magnet for specific sets of shitty people...

Damage to cities from TV shows and movies in my experience tends to come from how media makes these places look exciting and places where the next big thing is happening and you have to be there.... when in reality, there's more crime there and you have to fit in or else you'll never get to know what the lowdown is in town, and even then, there's likely a big nothingburger at the end of it all. The news, word of mouth, and real life footage/experiences tends to be a bigger negative reinforcer for me. though that depends on where I would like to visit.

Legit, I'm very sure Tokyo is getting really tired of weeaboos being obnoxious losers who think Japan is a wonderland or a cyberpunk frontier or where you can hook up and get laid easily.

but thats all true... well its a 80s cyberpunk frontier with futuristic fax machines and stuff. also Asian girls are easy, you are towering above them and they dig blue eyes even more than other woman. Its paradies for a decent sized, fit westerner.
let your hair grow out a bit, get a leather jacked and get laid... the problem is that those weeaboos are just disgusting, tiny and fat.

Most shows aren't filmed in the city they're set in, so you're not getting a real picture of it, setting aside completely that they're scripted works. "City as a character" is a stupid concept in these cases. Frasier and Friends were both filmed in LA, as are most shows recently. And if you weren't completely put off from ever visiting LA for a multitude of reasons before knowing all of that, you're probably terminally retarded.

My whole state is damaged by media set here for everyone else. Like just outside the few cities is unlivable wasteland or can see the Rockies from the border.
Still get annoyed when traveling and people make Wizard of Oz jokes. The fucking farm wasn't even filmed here but in Nebraska.

My understanding is that the entire Pacific Coast has ALWAYS been, for as long as Americans have settled it, a hotbed of utopian ideology and pompous elitism.

Its a novel theory, but it doesn't really hold up. The tourist industry will rape your city/entire state far harder than anything you'll ever see on TV.

The Untouchables TV show ruined Chicago by portraying it as a gangster ridden cesspool full of crime......oh wait, it always was even before the show and still is.

I really can't think of any TV shows that made me not want to go to certain cities, except for any network news program. But it's interesting to think about. I actually enjoy tv shows about places I've actually been so I can see if there's anything shown that I am familiar with. Like Rizzoli and Isles being set in Boston. However, they never really show much of Boston (except for stock footage between scenes) because it's clearly filmed on a studio lot in a warmer climate.

The most valid examples are almost certainly small towns and specific neighborhoods that had the misfortune to appear in some sitcom or chick flick, and then got swamped with either idiots who came there to "pay homage" and ruin the peace, or alternatively settled down for some romantic notion while still voting and behaving like they are in big cities.
