Not sure if I'd call it condescending? I think a lot of his videos can be condescending, but this one just came off more as explaining the technical side of film production, iirc. Could be wrong though, haven't seen it since the video came out.

What's interesting about Dan is if you've got a basic bachelor tier education and actually understood what was tought it becomes clear he's a sophomore pretending to be lecturer smart. He's actually a little embarrising to watch once you clock it. Overall it's simular watching my 3 year old nephew explaining differant colours except he started thinking when I showed him two differant shades of blue......well that and it's appropriate when my nephew cuddles 3 year olds.

I tried starting it, because I have, in the past, thought some of his film crit was at least interesting.

He spent the first 10 minutes talking about the woke politics, and yet cultural appropriation, of Bakshi's Coonskins.... Muh police brutatlity! Muh systems of oppression! and I shut the damn video off.

I don't know what video the other person watched. Dan doesn't even mention Coonskin until 12 minutes in (the first 10 minutes is a general overview of animation history and Bakshi's place in it) and while he does mention some woke stuff he sounds mostly positive about these movies to my ear.

But I'm only fifteen minutes in, Dan has time to ruin it for me.

I could do without the beginning where he sucks Peter Jackson's dick. I hate how that man was suddenly considered a genius because of Lord of the Rings, even though those movies suck, anything good about them is because of material taken from the novels (anything that was a Jackson-original contribution tends to be the weakest parts), and the man has literally never made a good movie that wasn't a remake or adaptation of an already-good work. Seriously, how can a man be considered a great director if literally the only times he's capable of creating anything is when he's handed a detailed blueprint to work with?

The bar has gotten incredibly low at this point. While content creation itself is more democratized, legacy corporations are just recycling old IPs in pursuit of nostalgia and heathen Chinesebux. The Critical Drinker did a solid rant not long ago about how the legacies of once great (or at least well-regarded) franchises have been ruined by mostly wokies who have no respect for the source material and decide that they know better, "standing on the shoulders of giants and shitting all over them". So when someone manages to not destroy the material, somehow that's seen as a work of staggering genius today. Jackson didn't fuck it up too badly and made lots of money and twits like Dan Olson lap it up. Compared to what's happened with Star Wars, Star Trek/Picard, He-Man, etc not fucking up the blueprint in favor of your own agenda driven propaganda looks like talent.

Dead-Alive was fucking awesome though. And are you seriously saying Heavenly Creatures was shit? Also it wasn't exactly a classic but I think Frighteners was at least good.

That said, I could seriously have lived without the Hobbit films. Those were fucked up. Part of the sheer charm of The Hobbit among Tolkien's works is that it's fairly light and insubstantial, the sort of thing you could hand to a bright 12 year old to read in a long afternoon. Why the fuck you would choose to turn that into a ponderous epic trilogy is beyond me.

So I generally do like Jackson's films, including his own, and including the schlock from his early career.

The one thing he could do to make me give him the Shamalamadingdong treatment would be if he fucks up Tintin. I would never forgive that.

Tell you the truth I've never seen Heavenly Creatures, and it does sound like the only one of his that is actually good.

I just really can't stand what I've seen of Jackson's style. Just from what I've seen, he directs everything like its a B-movie, with a bit of a childish mindset. He feels like one of those guys who is always trying to be as extreme as possible and its often to the point that things become unintentionally comical. Denethor being set on fire and running off that very long bridge that just happens to be there, for example.

Dead-Alive might be a good movie for gorehounds, but personally I'm not one (I'm not prudish about it, its just not something I particularly look for), so its appeal is lost on me.
