I'm gonna start this out by saying I don't know shit about nail polish, or most cosmetics. I have always been a bit more butch. I found out about this clusterfuck through friends of mine who are part of a niche in the cosmetics community, specifically in regards to indie nail polish. And in the indie nail polish scene right now, some shit is going down.
Mentality Nail Polish is an independent brand of nail polish owned by a man named Danny Dannels, a libertarian small businessman. There's a particular line of Mentality polish that was (until recently at least), their most popular, according to some people I've talked to; that'd be their Neon collection:
As it turns out, quite a few Mentality customers have been experiencing what Dannels has called "sensitivity" to their product. And by "sensitivity," we mean onycholysis.
Now, as I said before, I don't know shit about nail polish, but according to comments on The Mercurial Magpie blog (which I recommend reading, it contains probably the most thorough account of what's been happening), it seems like you'd really have to fuck up bad to pull that off:
A cosmetic chemist weighed in, and it looks like Dannels has some rather unorthodox methods of production:
Did I mention the fucking mainstream media (well, Cosmo, at least) is getting in on this shit?
So, with a bunch of women, including cosmetics bloggers who make their living off of showing pictures of their painted nails, rightfully pissed at Mentality, how does Dannels respond to this crisis?
The answer is "whine about how hard this crisis is for you."
And then stop giving out refunds.
And then have a 50% off sale on the very product that caused all this shit in the first place!
And then deny somebody's Paypal claim on the basis of suspicion of "internet bullying":
Oh, and they did finally issue an official recall for the polish... three hours ago. He's still blaming the arminex base, of course, even though he got a C&D from the company to stop blaming them for his fuck-up.
They had to "fire" their bloggers first, though. These unpaid bloggers.
The Mercurial Magpie's post was originally published on August 21st, and complaints about the nail damage go back even further. In fact, shortly before this drama initially started, Dannels decided to file his company as a corporation back in June, possibly to avoid lawsuits:
And Dannels himself? Apparently the company was founded by his wife, who may have left him, but his business address is in a trailer park, and he also has six kids. And the scale of his production would probably require multiple barrels of flammable chemicals.
And he writes shit like this:
And a sample from his Twitter:
TL;DR lolbertarian crazy man cooks up batch of nail polish that peels off people's finger nails, attempts to blame everything and everyone but himself, ice skates with Obama.

This is also just speculation at this point, but many other brands think that Mentality blaming the base is just using Arminex as a scapegoat (and thus why they are not turning to them to make them whole financially). I’m not sure if the brands want to be tied to their suspicions publicly so I won’t list their names here but I’m thinking it’s likely not just the base alone.
Comment #1 – It’s possible it was the neon pigment that is the culprit, not the base. Some illegal pigments can react and produce copious amounts of formaldehyde. Someone said that they work in a lab or something and got formaldehyde on their skin and it turned brown like some of the nail photos are showing. That sounds pretty reasonable to me, especially since people are saying the polishes smell really bad.
Comment #2 – Ok this Arminex base? no maker i know of had heard of it in july. I dont think Arminex makes it; they import it? There were 2 base companies left in 2012, a third opened later that year due to demand and it’s out somewhere further inland in CA, wonder beautys base. I guess I need to hunt around and ask. so they pretend like its a common name among indies; its not at all. the biggest indies I know of hadnt heard of it.
