Dark Dungeons the Movie -

So, sometime back there was a kickstarter for a movie adaptation of Jack Chick's hilariously awful religious tract called "Dark Dungeons". The director got the rights to the movie from Jack Chick himself, and aims to make a faithful and completely straight-faced adaptation of the original material. No added satire allowed or even needed, because this story almost satirizes itself.

From their Kickstarter page:
If you're not familiar with Dark Dungeons you can read it in its entirety here;

DARK DUNGEONS: THE COMIC

But all you really need to know is that it sets out to show what Jack Chick knows to be the truth behind role-playing. It shows that;

*Playing RPGs can make you gain real life magic abilities

*If you gain a high enough level you will be invited to join a secret cult

* Gamers whose characters die are in danger of committing suicide.

* That DM's are vile temptresses that are out to corrupt their players to the forces of evil.

Given all those startling claims it's amazing that the crusade against RPG's has not been more successful! In fact, the last movie to crusade against D&D was Tom Hank's 1982 classic, "Mazes and Monsters."

We are going change all that. I'm already investing all of my lottery winnings in this project but it's just not enough to get it filmed and that's where you come in.

If the idea of seeing a movie where all the anti-RPG arguments above are made with every last drop of drama and conviction I can wring out them appeals to you, then I want you to invest today and make this movie a reality.

A new trailer was released about a week ago, which will give you a good idea what we're in for when the movie comes out on August 14.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm so ready for this. :)

I watched it today with a friend, and I have to say it was very good. Not quite as good as I think it could have been (a few non sequiturs here and there, and some of the references seemed rather forced) but otherwise great. If you have friends who are into D&D or tabletop roleplaying, I would highly recommend gathering them together and putting this on. We had a great laugh.

I still can't believe they managed to get the rights from Jack Chick himself...

The man believes that Cthulhu is real. I'm not surprised at all that he didn't see what JR Ralls was actually doing. After all, he promised to play it completely straight and portray Chick's beliefs exactly as they are. He's simply not aware that his beliefs alone draw ridicule simply from their nature without any need for added satire.

YOU MEAN CTHULHU ISN'T REAL?! (haha... had to say that)

Actually... that kind of makes sense and that reminds me of a similar story... one of my english professors told me that one of the hardest things is teaching some of her students satire. Like, she taught at a university where most of her class one time were conservative Christians who had no idea that what Colbert was doing was satire and thought he was this awesome conservative tv show host and she pretty much had to devote a class teaching them the difference between satire and not satire. He must be kind of like that, especially if the people in charge of the movie presented their pitch in such a way that they made it look like they were on his side and this movie would help get his message across.

My jaw just dropped when I read that. Honestly, I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but... Good god, people.

Just saying but I don't think O'Reilly gets that Colbert was taking the piss out of him during his interview.

I want to see this because I had many laughs with that tract. Based on what I saw from that clip, I can't tell if the acting would be more funnier with more serious acting or not.

Does he really? As in, really believes that Lovecraft's character is an actual being? Because that will be the second funniest thing I heard this week.

Jack Chick's website said:
Contrary to the ramblings of D&D defenders like Michael Stackpole, the Necronomicon and the Cthulhu mythos are quite real.

Also, there are like, actual legit Cthulhu Cultists. Like they no joke belive the stuff, and not the cosplay LARP ones, its like a rebadged Satanism.

Are you referring to Venger (yes, like directly from the D&D cartoon, he seriously calls himself that)? He's a little nuts, like rubbing pregnant women's bellies with green corn syrup nuts...
