Here's the GFM criteria for legal fundraising.

The TL;DR is that you can raise funds for legal matters, even if you are a convicted criminal who is GFMing an appeal or something, but not if the thing you're accused of/convicted of is a hate crime (as defined by GFM itself, not federal/state guidelines), a violent crime, a financial crime or a crime of deception (i.e. identity theft). So, Dave's drug arrest falls within the guidelines of acceptable, alas.

They've certainly recreated the law in their own image, haven't they? Using semi-random criteria rather than, for example, the clear legal distinction between misdemeanour and felony.

As it stands, manufacturing or dealing in hard drugs are exempt, which is absurd to a degree.

There are certainly some cops who get into it because they're petty control freaks and want to have power over others, but acting like they're just some homogenous mass of cartoon villains is really just retardation. It's possible Dave's public defender (because you know he's going to use one; none of the money he's raising will ever be spent on legal fees) actually got it through his arrogant little bald head that a video explaining himself would be a Very Bad Idea. For Dave's sake, it would also help if they got it through to him that his previous public remarks about his arrest and detention were ill-advised and likely to hurt him.
