Looks interesting. I recommend embeding a trailer from YouTube to the op if you can find one. Will help a bit I think.

Edit: Much better.

I seem to be the only person in the world who didn't like the movie. Seriously, it was just a retread of the third season.
Probably one of the reasons I wasn't happy is because, back when the series was originally on I read a bunch about the events it was based on; because of that I was sure (fucking sure!) that the series was going to end with the great Deadwood fire, when the entire town burnt to the ground. This happens about ten years before the movie, and is the reason why everything has been rebuilt.
But to bring back and warm over the Hearst plotline? Fuck that...
And since Milch didn't feel beholden to the historical record (Charlie Utter died 20 years after the end of the movie, Sweargen 15 or so) why didn't they just have someone fucking kill Hearst, instead of ending with that "impotent display"? With the SJW culture the way it is, have Jane, Trixie or Stubbs do it, you'd have even better reviews and whole bunches of wet panties all over the fruited plain.

My thoughts could be summed up with this video:

It was good, but maybe it was a little too neat in its conclusion. My understanding of the threat Hearst posed in season three was that he had his enforcers in the hills (and elsewhere) who would rain holy hell upon Deadwood if they were bold enough to cross him. War between Deadwood and Hearst would impose a human toll neither Bullock nor Swearengen were willing to pay. What changed in the last ten years to make that no longer the case is not adequately explained. Was it statehood, Hearst's political career, or the depletion of gold from the hills that lessened the threat Hearst posed? Who knows?

The abbreviated nature of the film also meant many of the side characters got shoved off to the side. Dan, Farnum and Merrick are barely there. Doc Cochran and Jane don't interact with Sophia even though it seems like its been a few years at least since they've been in Deadwood at the same time. Bullock's wife gets barely any lines, but she teleports all over the damn place to stare daggers at Mrs. Ellsworth every time she makes googley eyes at Bullock (at one point she throws one of their children at Mrs. Ellsworth to break them up).

The movie deviates significantly from history. We don't get the camp fire. Characters die whose real life counterparts didn't die for many, many years. One character got a much more dignified death than the one experienced by the real life figure upon who he's based.

Small complaints:
-some of the dialogue felt less shakesperian and more yoda-esque.
-there's a "new whore" who gets a lot of screen time, but I have no idea what she's there for or what she's supposed to represent in the narrative. She's the very definition of a Mary Sue. Someone who shows up to an established property and is instantly liked and respected by everyone. Its weird.

I think she was written into the script so that Al could have someone to talk to in private since Trixie was living in sin with Saul.
They should've gone with another Indian head. (Geez, remember that? You couldn't do that sort of thing these days, even on HBO.)

Did anyone else eat peaches?

This is my favorite quote from the movie so far:

"I think you ought to consider running for office. Outnumbered as we are by shitbirds."

Everyone here is talking about Cy Tolliver and here I am missing my boys Silas Adams & Richardson. This was bromance I wanted to see made after especially after Season 2 when Adams, Dan, and Johnny kicked a lot of chink ass at the conclusion and watched out for each other throughout Season 3.

Also, I want to share this picture.

Just started watching. I don't recall the dialogue being this incredibly bizarre, pseudoshakespearian in the series?
If this is your first watch, I highly recommend watching the series with subtitles.

I'm quite fond of Al's "Every man worth the name knows the value of being unreachable."

It was always there to varying degrees. I don't know why it feels so stilted in the movie. Maybe the direction was off. Maybe Milch wasn't rewriting the dialogue as much (maybe the alzheimer's is slowing him down).

Yeah, Merrick was in there.

I give it a B-. It's not the same with Powers Boothe dead and Titus Welliver tied up as Harry Bosch.

Also, I like the poster:

Did he have less screen time than he did in the show? I'm wondering how they pulled it off, because gossip goes a lot more fast these days than when Deadwood was on air, and I'm guessing people will bring up his history. I'd still watch the movie and wouldn't let that stop me from enjoying it, but I wonder if people will complain about that. If he's featured less maybe it won't matter.
I figured he'd still be included since they brought back pretty much everyone.

He had a few lines doing an auction, and a couple of scenes taking pictures. Jeffrey Jones has gained so much weight he's almost unrecognizable.

I didn't recognize him during those scenes, I only knew he was in it because I watched the credits at the end.
Anyway, I just finished watching it and I really have nothing to complain about except wishing it was a whole season. I remember watching the final episode how ever many years ago it was when it originally aired, and being let down with how badly everyone got fucked by Hearst all season without getting any real payback in the finale. Seeing him get stomped into the mud was deeply satisfying, I'll let Bullock slide on stopping the group fatality since it shows he's improved on suppressing his need to be the righteously violent and angry prick he was in his series days.
Gonna pour more than one out for the cocksucker of all cocksuckers Al Swearengen. May his eternal rest not be too restful for his sensibilities.
