Why isn't this a good "political climate" for a movie about vigilantism and when would be a better time? Is this the critics not so subtle way of admitting that they can't help but be influenced by a violent movie? Maybe they should stick to comedies if violent movies make them feel funny.

Have film critics ever not been moralistic as hell? They, far more than critics of literature or music or video games, seem to be really easy to shock with violence. Siskel and Ebert were terrible about this; they constantly ragged on slasher films (not that I'm a fan of the genre myself) for being "depressing" due to their violence.

Sure, there was salt when Eli Roth showed the trailer to his remake of Death Wish. They complained about toxic masculinity (how dare the main character feel like a failure for not being there to protect his family), revenge violence and racism for a white guy helping out some black people and shooting a black criminals. Now that it's out, the salt is pouring.

Now the real fun is that the regular viewing audience has given the film an over 80% approval rating.

I'm kind of one note on remakes, but I'll just reiterate this is a movie that did not need to be remade and it looks shitty. Bronson did this role as well as it ever needed to be done. Just watch the original, and you'll also get to see a young Jeff Goldblum in a hilarious performance as someone genuinely deserving of Bronson's rage.

Example:

This is so beautifully '70s.

Critic reviews for horror movies have always been worthless. There are dozens of horror classics that got absolutely dismal reviews, like Friday the 13th, Elm Street, The Thing, Halloween, Slumber Party Massacre, etc. One of the first things I learned when I got into the genre was to watch whatever looks fun and judge for myself because if I only stuck to the ones that had critical approval I would hardly watch anything besides the current crop of big budget horror like the Conjuring and It (which are both good movies but they pull too many of their punches for my taste).

Roger Ebert actually gave The Devil's Rejects a positive review, while acknowledging that it was utterly nihilistic and without any redeeming social value whatsoever. (That's actually one of my favorite parts of The Devil's Rejects. It absolutely rejects that ridiculous thing some shitty gore films do when they suddenly try to have some deeper meaning which isn't there.)

It's one of my favorite Ebert reviews, in that he does warn consumers that they shouldn't go to it expecting a happy experience, while recognizing the craft that went into it.

Ebert said:
OK, now, listen up, people. I don't want to get any e-mail messages from readers complaining that I gave the movie three stars, and so they went to it expecting to have a good time, and it was the sickest and most disgusting movie they've ever seen. My review has accurately described the movie and explained why some of you might appreciate it and most of you will not, and if you decide to go, please don't claim you were uninformed.

It certainly isn't the sickest movie I've ever seen, although it may top American movies with mass distribution in sheer sadism. I thought this was a very fair review.

I also wish Rob Zombie had made more movies at this level of quality.

Chris Stuckmann made a good point when he said that the current political climate is not a valid excuse for ripping on the movie, just because it was released at a bad time doesn't mean that if it was released 5 years ago or 5 years in the future that the movie would magically be better.

If you're a reviewer you can't use the recent atrocities as a justification for judging a shitty movie, you have to judge it based on its quality.

I can't be bothered to do actual research on the killjoy chucklefucks, but what do you want to bet these guys have given superhero films- about vigilantes meting out justice on people outside the rule of law- positive reviews in the past? Maybe they'll even review Deadpool 2 positively.

I mean I doubt the Death Wish remake is good but...I like it when hypocrites are called out.

Some of them seem more offended about a movie than the actual murders in Chicago.
Because a white guy killing black guys in Chiraq is culturally appropriation!

What would be really hilarious if just for teh lulz and to piss these snowflakes off more if one of the thugs he guns down is wearing a hoodie and carrying Arizona ice tea and skittles. The salt would be so much it would give Ancient Rome a giant boner.

I dont like it from the trailer.
horrible rap music, all white bad guys despite beeing chicago, with the usual token black characters.
seems the usual hollywood crap.
Bruce Willis shooting a bunch of black gangbangers set to "Back in Black" was so ridiculous that it bordered on being entertaining, but the movie looks like a gigantic piece of shit. I'm not surprised at all by the reviews, there's very little to rally behind in this film beyond how it makes annoying people on twitter uncomfortable. Kind of reminds me of the video game Hatred, which was quickly forgotten about by everyone after release.

I've seen the trailer like 7000 times already on TV. They just keep playing it and playing it. At first I thought it was an Unbreakable sequel because I forgot all about the Death Wish remake.

This movie is probably garbage. People who love Bruce Willis enough to watch anything he makes might enjoy it. It's probably not going to properly express Chicago demographics too much because that would be problematic. This movie should not have been remade. It's a classic. I don't feel that you should remake classics. You take something crap that actually had potential and you remake that.

what I find amusing, is that he is already acting like he is a marine or spec ops, or something. Busting out m4 with scopes and shit.
Bronson made the whole movie with a regular gun and it was a fairly realistic portrayal of how your average dude, would faire in that kind of scenario.
I guess today's audience would be too dumb or lazy, to appreciate a movie like that in this day and age.
