Before I read this article, I did not know what defunding the police meant. But when I read the article, it actually makes for good policy. Nobody wants to live in a state where there is no law enforcement at all. However redirecting resources towards programs such as violence prevention programs, dealing with homelessness, mental health and substance abuse, will empower people who are better trained at dealing with these issues than law enforcement.
Unfortunately there has been a trend towards making criminal offenses out of society problems such as homelessness. No, we really don't need making it illegal to give a free meal to homeless people or to call the police on someone having a mental health problem. Let's take these kinds of burdens off the backs of law enforcement so they can concentrate on those areas where they are really needed such as dealing with violent crime.
