Why Dexter Is Returning To Showtime For A Limited Series
Showtime's iconic serial killer is coming back, and this is why it's finally happening.
10 episodes, starting filming early 2021, airing fall of 2021.
It could be a woke Dexter. He been teaching his trade to a trans lesbian black woman who will be the main character.I was expecting a woke Dexter's Lab upon clicking and what i got was much much worse.
Well, at least it has the original showrunner back that did the first four seasons... not that that's saying much. The show always relied on its unique hook and Micheal C. Hall's performance; even those first few seasons were mediocre -- they only ever looked good compared to what the show would later become.
If the revival focuses solely on an isolated Dexter fighting with his urges and tracking down an interesting killer then it could be enjoyable.
Season two was awful. It wasted both Doakes and the Bay Harbor Butcher story for literally nothing. I remember even Micheal C. Hall talking about how he disagreed with doing that plot for the second season. Beyond that, all the seasons had terrible subplots for the supporting cast that existed just to give them something to do.
I haven't seen it since 2007, but the fact that things escalated so quickly I thought was interesting.
That said it certainly wasn't perfect, I do remember the whole thing with the British chick was cheesy (but at least she got naked) and they did arguably kill off Doakes too early, but like I said, the fact that things escalated so quickly was exciting, even if it did maybe hurt the series in the long term.
That said, season 1 and 4 are the overall best, season 4 was so fucking good that it really breaks my heart that it was all downhill from there.
Really, Dexter should have had a fairly brief run for quality over quantity's sake, but they're effort to pad it out really hurt it, but see that's why I've never quite connected with TV as a medium like most people, I like stories to be more planned out, not beholden to ratings.
Another big problem with season two is that it's all treated as a very mild inconvenience for Dexter. His dump site's been discovered, all the bodies have been found, the police are searching for the Bay Harbor Butcher... and Dexter's still going to work, spending time with his girlfriend, and hanging out with his sister. Then everything ends so neatly and tidy that outside of Doakes being gone everything is back to the status quo by the end of the finale.
Dexter was often entertaining in a trashy way but outside of the A plots for season one and four I'd never really call it good. Even in those best seasons you still had annoying supporting characters, pointless subplots, incredibly cheap and convenient plotting, technology being treated as magic, and a lot of characters constantly acting stupid for the sake of the plot.
Dexter should have only been 3 seasons. Literally all the good elements of the 8 of them could be condensed down to that.
I hope the revival is good, and I'll be watching either way, but I hope Dexter doesn't only kill racist white men or right-wing politicians or something. Media is so focused on propaganda these days nothing is safe.
They also have the full book series to work off now, so hopefully that'll help even though they diverged by S2.
That's fair. I think even 1,2 and 4 have some dead weight episodes and scenes that could be cut to just make it 3 seasons. Dexter wasn't obscenely padded, but there were lots of moments, plots and so on that could be trimmed to make it much more compelling; that's why I said three. It should have only been 4 seasons, season 4 should have been season 3 and season 4 should have wrapped things up.
