Discord to Police Their Platform -

We can all still use IRC to this day, but please for the love of God find yourself a VPN or a proxy or something when connecting to a server, it doxes your IP and hostname each time you connect.
Your (likely dynamic) home IP literally does not matter at all. Where did this 'dox your IP' bullshit start?

That's what someone said in one of the Discord servers I'm in said. I've never really had an issue with that since I used IRC actively up until the advent of like Skype and Discord and whatnot, and yeah I can tell you from experience that dynamic IPs are not a huge deal, they don't give approximate locations. Static IPs on the other hand are a bit more on the scary side since from what I've seen they give a more accurate approximation of your location, but that's just what I know.

Good luck finding me, 1,300,000 people live within 5 miles of my house.

Every single server I have been on: without fail I have witnessed conversations between a bunch of dudes on how to feminise themselves.
These are supposed to be GAMING servers.
It's not a big Discord server without a venting channel where you can talk about how high school sucks/your mom is a bitch, and at least one porn channel. It also has to have 400 channels to make reading conversations a mess, a janny who enforces using each autistic channel instead of #general, someone screeching because the server owner forgot to disable @everyone, and at least one user with a trans flag in their profile pic.

The only good Discord "servers" are small groups that would have functioned perfectly on literally any other platform. The only reason they're using Discord is because they heard about the teens using this cool thing called Discord and they don't know of the reputation it has.

I honestly think that Discord is going to die out in 2-3 years. All it takes is people finding out about another application that does what Discord does but better for it to go under.
Discord is going to be like Skype but deader in a few years. The only people who use Skype are a bunch of boomers who either are abusing it's "online calling" feature to phone up someone in another country or businesses too stubborn to switch to something else. Even then Zoom became the tool of choice among the tech illiterates during lockdown.

I mean it's still around. It's not huge anymore (like the millions it used to have) but it's still there lol
The problem with IRC is 9 out of 10 IRC channels are ghost towns. IRC is nowhere near even where it was 10-15 years ago, and the younger demographic just wants to use something like Discord instead. Then there's the fact that you need to fiddle with setting up a "bouncer" to use it on more than one device, or join the same channel on 2-3 computers with a username for each one. It's also usually unencrypted and some channels end up publishing public logs.

We need a nice Matrix client that isn't shit.

Something where you can make a group and send an invite link to your friends and it Just Werks, no fucking around with accounts or 200MB of JavaScript bloat or anything.

People don't appreciate how good onboarding Discord has. You click the discord.gg link, you type in a username, and you're chatting. After a few hours, it will ask you to register with an email address. After a few days, it will ask for phone verification.

There's nothing like this for Matrix. You have to make an account, fill out a captcha, manually join the group, and only then can you start chatting. The client also looks like hot garbage and it crashes your browser every now and then.

It's not like you're limited to using one client though, there's a few others to pick from. Also what the fuck when I used Discord a while ago I had to use an email right away like any other platform and wasn't forced to verify via phone number, was this change recent?

They all suck. All of the web clients use insane amounts of RAM. None of them have good onboarding, you have to first make an account and then join.

You probably visited the site and made an account. Try going through a discord.gg link - it will ask for username, and then simply plop you into the chat directly and nag you to enter email. This is extremely good, there is almost no barrier to entry.

The phone verification is based on PMs and your IP reputation, I think. If you register with Tor, you can use it, but the moment someone sends you a PM it will ask for phone number.

It's very disgusting, because it will play the notification sounds randomly to give you the illusion that you're missing out unless you verify your phone number. It will do this even if there is no activity, just to get you to verify.

I just said it's still around I didn't say it's still popular, or that it has been unaffected by age and has all the features you want/expect nowadays

Also I think the few remaining big IRC networks use encryption via tls (just not end to end but then again most things are not end to end including discord) and logs are de facto public info if you're already in a channel, basically nothing you say in public channels should be considered secret kinda like how nothing you say on a public forum is secret either

Used to Admin an mIRC server back in the 90s. There would be a channel for the bots to shoot out their code and errors we would sit in. You could also make the bots "talk." People would sext the channel bots, I always wondered if they knew that shit got logged as well. Or that some days the bot talking back was just a bored ass admin who wanted to troll.

I think just because it's dynamic doesn't mean it will give always give wide range during a geo-ip lookup. Most dynamic allocation requires the user to restart their router to switch so they can be stuck with an IP a while; I've once checked my dynamic ip location and only my house came up in the error radius.

I only have Skype because businesses still use the damn thing. Games Workshop does their meetings and interviews through it as well.

Is Microsoft killing Skype for MS Teams? Which runs like a shitter MS branded version of Discord at this point, right down to being coded in bloated Electron.

These kids will never know the joy of taking over and occupying an IRC channel with some random internet friends. Or holding long conversation with a bot only to realize it's a bot after everyone laughs at you. Or plotting nuking small eastern European countries for their top level domains because it matched the initials of your IRC nick.

Fun times.

Or the joy of warez bot and starting a download over dialup that would last for days. That damn bot always knew when you were at 99% and would stop and corrupt the file.

I don't get why companies don't provide service to everyone. I don't like racism and don't even hate trannies that much but I feel like they're putting in way too much effort and money into shrinking their userbase. Why not just let everyone go? If someone is being racist and upsetting someone there's a block button there for a perfectly good reason.

Several reasons.
1) Everyone, but especially millenials and boomers, are karens.
2) Corporations are incredibly image dependent, they cant afford shit like "Does your child use discord? are you aware its filled with child porn?!", furries always get a pass because the mainstream media are too uncomfortable to talk about them.
3) All tech companies who are independent of the big ones who are hand in hand with the US Govt are under constant threat of either being drownes in legal shit (Like Backpage), or what i think is coming soon, nationalisation then allocation to a strategic partner of the govt, like with all radio patents being given to General Electric for "Security Reasons".
4) The socjus people take over all the admin and operational roles and then control what the tech people hear so all the info they get is "Nazi presence will kill our platform, we must purge it. Its what the user wants".

There are more but these are my favourites.
