I like discord. I have yet to meet any pedophiles or overt weirdos, so I'd say I don't have any issues with it. It's great for communication during games when the alternative is Skype or a group phone call. But overall, Discord isn't too bad. Just stay out of large servers.

Discord is immensely privacy invasive and as many others have stated, habor multiple suspected pedos. It doesn't help that Discord was created by a bunch of furfags.

It goes without saying to use the web-based version instead of installing the application on your desktop, preferably visited through a VPN.

I was there looking at Discord in the beta stage. Their is nothing special nor innovated about Discord. It was originally going to be like Teamspeak but a bit more polished.

The reasons I did not go to Discord are:
1. I knew how they were going to make their money... YOUR PRIVATE DATA.
2. I don't go to sites where there are fucking pedos as well as the fucking freaks in management.

I'd go back to IRC if I just want a degenerate coomer chat open in the background, and for anything I need to be more feature-rich and collaborative or even slightly professional, I really would just use Slack.

That same cofounder (rands) ended up cutting all former ties with the rest of the comic team and had every appearance of his retconned and replaced with minor characters like atandt as if to denounce any of the old provocative humour he once had. Now he's just as much of a soulless Cali tech drone on Twitter and that gives me enough reason to not want to bother with his work including Slack, but that's just me.

Oh man, so I'm not the only one that noticed the giant amount of orwellianist editing going on with jerkcity. There's entire comics that got stripped down to one panel/one line because of it.

You'll run into trannies if you join any community "servers", at least in my experience. Eg if a youtuber has a discord there will be trannies. I think some 4chan general threads set up discords still and it goes without question there will be a tranny.
The memes are true but you won't recognize this without using discord like an extension of social media instead of treating it as just an easy chat client. Most people use it as a form social media I'm pretty sure.

On the topic of 4chan Discords, that has always given me a chuckle. "anons" grouping up into servers and sperging out, usually with their personal discord accounts and then talking about how they hate the glowies or need to do things in minecraft...

As a boomer, I treat it basically like mIRC 2.0. I rarely join VCs but the ability to share images and links is nice.

There may be more people online today than there's ever been, which is why not even mIRC during its heyday wasn't such a haven for all kinds of degenerates. But just like it was back then, treat it like a giant circus, and each server a circus tent. Everyone is a clown, until proven otherwise.

Same applies to all social media - the experiences you have in them are directly proportional to the social circles you gravitate towards. That's pretty much my lesson learned from hanging out on IRC chatrooms and MSN Messenger groups back in the day, don't turn it into your only source of social interaction, and certainly don't take it too seriously.

If all you're using it is for text and image sharing then I can also happily suggest Ripcord as an alternative client to Discord's own gimped browser repackage. Does the job perfectly while remaining fairly light and also looking reminiscent of old VoIP applications and IRC clients.
