“I can’t say definitively what might happen down the road […] but [Dishonored] is resting for now. As far as pure immersive sims like Dishonored go, I don’t know if we’re going to continue to make like carbon copies – this qualifies as an immersive sim and it’s the only thing we’re ever going to make. The things that are important to us as a studio are coherent, deep world building and environmental storytelling – we’re always going to craft spaces that you feel like you’re visiting, whether it’s Dunwall or Talos

"Pure immersive sims like Dishonored" HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Dumbing down Thief and adding elements from the Shock series makes an okay game but pretending it's on the level of Underworld or Thief is...pretentious.

That's what always bugged me about Diahonored. It felt like they tried too hard to push the pedigree of "some of our people worked for Origin/Looking Glass, our game is great". But it was just okay. Fun, but with a side of unwarranted self importance.

Irrational at least understood "okay, most console gamers don't know or care about System Shock. Let's let the game stand on its own merits!"

Of course I'm probably remembering wrong and reality is completely different.

I was actually in the middle of writing a post about how I gave up on the first Dishonored before completing it and had zero interest in the second, and I expected to be in a minority here and get ripped for it, but you beat me to criticizing the series.

In my case I really liked the world-building and aesthetics but felt the story was insultingly stupid. Basically every single time there was a cutscene I was baffled by how illogical every step of the plot was. I don't remember it all, but some prime examples that come to mind were the loyalists saying that since Corvo was going to a masquerade ball he could just wear his mask, even though said mask was plastered on wanted posters all over the city, and Trevor Pendleton being literally on the other side of a door when you leave an interrogation, somehow immediately knowing all of the information obtained from the interrogation and having a letter written up and ready to hand to you based on the info obtained there. Not only were these details obviously illogical to an obnoxious degree, but they were even more irritating because they would be effortless to fix (give Corvo a temporary different mask for that single mission, and have Pendleton present for the interrogation, wham, bam, done).

I forgot what the exact moment was for me (I think it had to do with Daud), but I eventually noped out after enduring one too many headscratchers like that. That series being cancelled is no loss as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I stopped playing it about 3/4 of the way through when it first came out of of boredom. I finished it recently just to say I did and was kind of, eh. It has a few neat ideas and nice visuals but ultimately feels like Bethsoft wanted to crap out a competitor to Bioshock and Deus Ex.

I legit didn't even know there was a sequel until it showed up on Steam. I'm very surprised it made it past one entry.

Hopefully Arkane still focuses on making their style of immersive sim game. I've no love for the Dishonored IP myself but I'm concerned that the low sales of both this and Prey (my no. 2 game last year) will force Arkane to dumb down their formula to appeal to a wider market, like BGS.

Well, Dishonored wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't like it was something I hadn't seen before. I'm kind of surprised they wanted to go past two games.

Their formula was "dumbed down Thief". If they dumb it down further it will be Thi4f.

loved dishonored but like most games, it didn't need a sequel. i hope this is the end of it

this is unfair. ghosted it on my first run, which was too easy and boring (you just blink from one high place to another, maybe stop time in a pinch). using all the tools and allowing yourself to get a little violent makes for a very different, and i think more interesting game

Well the game is an absolute slog if you try to play non-violently. Dishonored encourages you to not have fun to get the good ending.
