And then Disney does away with arguably the most iconic show scene of all their rides and it's met with indifference by them.

The nicest thing I can say is at least they're reasoning for why it happened (people no longer understand the pirates are the villains) makes sense.
there's also the lowkey implication that she was already a whore before the pirates from her wearing all-red and general nonchalance about the situation

Oh yeah, the clear implication is that she's a prostitute.

But what people forgot is that the pirates are supposed to be intimidating, kind of like the ghosts in Haunted Mansion, we're supposed to hope as we ride the ride they don't start to rob us.

But that became really muddled once the movies came out where pirates were the heroes, so people retroactively think the ride is condoning the pirates behavior, instead of matter of factly depicting the kind of stuff pirates would get up to back in the day, not necessarily condoning it but Wokeness is where nuance and subtlety go to die.

If nothing else South of the South shown Uncle Remus as a positive father figure to the white kid. To where it could be speculated that while Uncle Remus wasn't the kid's father, he sure as hell was the kid's daddy.
iirc the whole point of Song Of The South is old folktales slaves told each other (with vague backgrounds of African folklore) about how to use your wits and quick thinking to evade those who wish to oppress you
hating on Song Of The South is literally nothing less than supporting slaveowners

It's weird because the free port scene in the first movie was probably most inspired by the auction, but nobody is saying cancel the Pirates movies (to my knowledge), even after getting Johnny Depp cancelled from other things. Probably because they can't think of any excuses for why it's okay to still like the movies.

It doesn't help either that all the animal characters are black too, so it's not like Br'er Fox is whitey hatin' on poor Br'er Rabbit either. Both of whom are shown to be highly intelligent instead of being stereotypical "hurr durr dumb blacks".

the line between "poor and uncultured white southern culture" and "poor and uncultured black southern culture" is a lot fuzzier than most people choose to observe, especially yankees
like literally I just finished watching the dank transfer of Song Of The South that I linked to, and the kids all talk just about the same, regardless of race
but yeah I can def see the idea of Fox and Bear being some sellout Uncle Tom mofo ass bitches

Song Of The South took place during Reconstruction immediately after the American Civil War. Uncle Sam wasn't a slave in SotS but a free man who worked as a share cropper.
But Disney never made that clear, so you have people thinking it was meant as a defense of slavery. Admittedly, of course, that was his own fault. He thought people could tell.

The film should have been released on, say, a Disney Treasures DVD with the proper context, the same way the wartime cartoons were. But, unfortunately, I heard from someone who's worked in the industry that they never did so because it was too well-known and would cause controversy no matter what they did to ensure it would have the right context and be well out of reach of children.

Back then, Hollywood expected people to have brains.
From what I understand they purposely did avoid making it clear that it's the reconstruction era to avoid upsetting the south, but any sort of reading between the lines make it clear that it probably is supposed to be the reconstruction era.

Song Of The South is definitely dated but Disney treating it like it's radioactive is silly, if it was treated like a normal movie the controversy would probably be mild at best, people only assume it's really racist because Disney tries to hide it away.

Disney is silly that way, it's the same deal with the documentary The Sweatbox, which given it's reputation you might think it's some real shocking expose but it's more or less just a making of documentary where the most shocking thing is David Spade says "pussy", by treating these movies as being so radioactive they make it seem worse than they are, it's total Streisand effect.

I think it should have been released, but like I said above, Disney does not want to court controversy.

The most controversial scene of the movie only sounds back when taken out of context. You say "the tarbaby scene" and people have a knee jerk reaction about it, but if you actually watch it's fucking nothing. Now, if Br'er Fox slappedd Br'er Rabbit while screaming "TAR BABY!" then yeah, they'd have a point. But it's an inanimate object literally made out of tar. And if it had big red lips on it, again they'd actually have a point, but it's shockingly lip-free for that era. There is far more fuss about Song of the South than there actually is worth getting upset about.

I'll be fair that it does lay the "oh lawds" and such on a little thick but, yeah
to a degree I can accept erasing the live action parts because delicate yankees can't understand how us poor southern folk all talk like dumb motherfuckers (just like but sorta different from YOUZ GUIZ) but going as far as to remove the the entire production and anything that ever mentioned it is really "breh"

As someone who grew up in the rural deep south....yeah. I got to see a cross burned on a black guy's lawn once. He married a white woman, so that's why. Meanwhile the fact that trailer trash mudsharks kept finding black babies in the wood pile was sorta ignored.

I don't think northeners really understand the complex racial dynamics of the deep south. SotS is a southern cultural icon who cares if the yankees think it's racist as hell.

What's funny is how "Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man" this whole situation is, the theory goes is that the word Yankee itself is derived from a Dutch word meaning hillbilly or redneck basically.

So it's rednecks all the way down.
