Why tumblr thinks everything from DiD to BPD to PTSD to autism are happy fun rides is beyond me.

It's because of several factors:

-Many of them are either teenagers (who are emotionally volatile to begin with) or stunted man/womanchildren
-Many of them want attention/praise
-They want this without actually working for it since you have to actually offer something of value to get those things (respect is earned not given and all that)
-They see that those with disabilities/mental illnesses get attention/praise without having to earn it most of the time
-They also realize that if you're an oppressed group (like the disabled or mentally ill) people will flock to defend and protect them almost regardless of circumstance
-Even if the disabled/mentally ill person is being a little shithead (see the people who try to defend Chris' actions due to his :autism:)
-So it's attention and immunity from criticism all rolled into one package
-But most of them don't actually have the illness in question and it's not like PTSD is contagious! So what to do?
-They lie. They'll claim the doctors are bigoted, claim they've been sexually assaulted over 9000 times, exaggerate the symptoms, whatever they can conceivably get away with.
-It's the internet so it's a lot harder to prove the person is faking and it makes you look like a douchebag if you try calling them out
-:autism::autism::autism::autism::autism:

Frankly, it's a great :ruse: on the internet, if not in real life.

Basically this, including that they also want to excuse the fact that they're horribly lazy and disgusting hygienic wise and want a reason to excuse it. That or they're so lazy in general, they use mental illness as an escapist tool on the internet to somehow excuse said laziness.

Ah, the multiple systems. These guys are kind of a dying breed on Tumblr, if you'll believe that; they used to be far more brazen. I remember there being Advice Animal memes for these guys whining about the singlets, and checklists for singlet privilege.

Without revealing too much, one of my exes claimed to be a multiple system. It was a time when I was a little too open minded, so I believed him.

It got to the point that he had 50+ "headmates" that were fictional characters from different franchises, from Attack on Titan to that one indie game called OFF.

He had a headmate that was Bertholdt from Attack on Titan and we got into an argument. Because Bertholdt 'fronted' more often than any of the other headmates, he made the decision to stop talking to me. You can imagine how that turned out.

Eventually I had to put my foot down and gave my ex an ultimatum: either Bertholdt or me. He cried abuse and I broke up with him, then he ranted on his system blog as 'Shiroba' from Dramatical Murder and said he hoped I'd die and all my friends would leave me. He also made a "callout" post about how I was "abusive".

I can never look at Attack on Titan or Dramatical Murder the same ever again. I've pretty much grown to dislike both vehemently.

I think DID gets a lot of flak for a mental illness, and rightly so. It's incredibly easy to fake and it gives people an excuse to be assholes and try to avoid being held responsible for their behavior and actions.

I remember a few years back, these "multiple system" people didn't use DID as an excuse for their whacked out beliefs. Many were against comparing it to DID because they recognized it was a serious mental disorder not to be thrown around lightly, and they didn't want to be seen as mentally ill. If a system person did say "it's just like DID!", people in their own community would step in and tell them off.
I wonder when the change from "no we're not crazy" to "we all have a serious incredibly rare mental illness" happened. Probably around the same time self-diagnosis started blowing up and "ummm why do you hate mentally ill minors?" became the go-to excuse for any form of criticism or questioning.

Probably around the time otherkin had to stop comparing themselves to transgender people and latched onto the "we're mentally ill!" excuse.

Is this like DID/MPD?
No. DID/MPD implies that we were created from trauma which was not the case at all. It also implies that we are alters of someone(or a Host) which also is not the case. We are our own individuals and were not created from anyone or anything; especially not from other system members.
From their website.

All this fictive headmate stuff reminds of me back in the day when weebs would claim that they're actually descendants of whatever anime character they were obsessed with at the time. Only this time, they actually think they are the characters.

I remember looking on Dangan Ronpa tag on tumblr and seeing one chick saying that she was "literally Chihiro" and that he was mtf. Wasn't surprised to see her have a list of 20+ characters from anime as her headmates with a special snowflake gender and/or sexuality attached to each one.

Yeah, it was called "otakukin" and the term has long since fallen out of style.

I'm no psychology expert at all, but I will say there is some legitimacy to DID. However, based on what I've read about this, there are a few things I've assumed.

There is one thing that people diagnosed with DID share, that is, severe physical or sexual trauma during their early childhood. It seems when the child is in a vulnerable state, disassociation occurs. Disassociation is a normal function of the brain; many people experience "shutting down" or "auto pilot mode" when they receive depressing or traumatic news. For a child, shoving off their pain to an "alter" is a way for them to not have to deal with the reality of the pain they are experiencing because it's simply too much for their tiny brains to process. This is why, mileage may vary, that there are archetypes with DID systems. The little child, representing the childhood they were robbed from. The protector, the person they wished to have been when the trauma was occurring. The parental figure, the nurturing mom or dad they wished they had, etc etc. To me, it makes sense that a brain's normal function breaks due to a small child yet not having a sense of identity.

In the case of Tumblr, this is where it tends to anger me. There are many arguments of the possibility that "systems" can come from out of the blue and not from trauma. This is where your, you know, Narutos and Garnets spring up. I think a lot of people treat being able to identify with a fictional character as if they are that character rather than just having a deep admiration. It gets to the point where people start fights over which Sauske is the REAL Sauske, and it's really just a repeat of DeviantArt fights where fangirls claim they are "married" to anime characters.

Another thing about DID as well is the lapses of memory. The "host", or the person that is in the brain most of the time, should have difficulty recalling what alters had done. This is really the main thing that makes it easy to spot the fakes on Tumblr, due to the fact that many claim they can just simply talk to their headmates in headspace. It sort of makes me feel if they aren't making that part up, perhaps the voices they hear are due to another mental disorder, and not DID.

I'll leave a link to a documentary about DID (formerly MPD) because it can be a legitimately interesting subject, which means of course it's appropriated by teenagers who totally have it because they suffered severe trauma like their mommy telling them to get off the computer.

Self DXing mental illness is the ultimate get out of jail free card. To autists and immature kids anyway.

They never seem to get the logical response that if you admittedly can't control your actions, you're basically telling the rest of us that we're going to have to do it FOR you.... and surprise, you aren't going to like that.

Who the everloving fuck would willingly CHOOSE Chris-chan as a headmate? Seriously wtf?

Short answer: attention.

Long answer: it's not too uncommon for DID sufferers to get unfavorable alters, such as one who is very angry and lashes out at people when something happens to trigger it. Tumblr fakers like to exaggerate unsavory headmates inside of them because it's a testament to how "mentally ill" they are and they'll get pity points and/or Tumblr dollars.
