I will use the word they in here only due to the fact that I want to be as careful as possible to not disclose any information.
It's crazy that people would pretend to have a disorder caused by extreme abuse. I work with severe mental illness and disabilities and in the entire time I've only had two clients who could be diagnosed with D.I.D. and one who was diagnosed DD-NOS. They did not come in a different person every day and every one of them was diagnosed with PTSD as well. The DD-NOS diagnosis was specifically made because they showed signs of dissociation, but they lacked the age of abuse and inability to remember events, specifically in childhood, required for D.I.D.
If they were triggered during our talk yes they would state change, but it's hard to explain how it presents in real life cause its not some showy thing like media says. Think of having a discussion with someone and they get to a topic and blank slate on you. Their affect would either be blunted or exaggerated and when the memory was over they may have been a bit disorganized, but it was not suddenly another person in the room.

After United States of Tara came out we had an influx of people who were self-diagnosers. And there are doctors who will never diagnose it because you don't "treat" for D.I.D. you treat for the symptoms it causes the PTSD aspects. This thread brings back memories of college. There was this boy, let's call him Johnson, that was sitting next to me. Seemed decent enough, we ended up talking and becoming class friends (people you are friends with in class but don't interact or talk outside of class). Anyway, one day he asked me out, which surprised me because he told me he was gay. I turned him down because I wasn't interested, and he acted like a real prick.
The next day he acted like nothing had happened. I ignored him because fuck him, I ain't gonna waste my time with someone who acts like an asshole. A day later he asked me if he had said something mean. He then explained he has MPD/DID and that he has 3 alters, one who is gay, one who is bi sexual, and one who is a pan sexual pervert named Chris. He told me it was Chris who asked me out and acted like a jerk, and apologized.
Later, I found Johnson's tumblr and according to his "about my alters" page, Chris is a pansexual 18 year old boy with a sex addition, who was born after Johnson was raped by his twin brother and older sister. Thing is, Johnson had told me he was a only child... so where did his twin brother and older sister bit come from?

the thing that really makes me doubt her is the fact that she "switched" so many times in a single day, knew exactly who switched and exactly when, each time, and that multiple alters were somehow all onboard with being in the video, much less showing themselves. people with genuine DID aren't exactly open books about it, and the alters are even less likely to be that way.

and to answer your question: dissociative disorders without the presence of split personalities absolutely exist. things like derealization and depersonalization fall into that category. DID at its core is just a VERY extreme dissociative disorder, to put it simply, which is why it's so uncommon and just cannot develop without severe, repeated traumatic experiences.

I think what makes it hard for me to take a lot of DID people seriously is that it seems like they "Switch" whenever they experience an emotion. Like, Happy Annie is not actually Annie being happy, oh god this emotion cant be me, therefore I'm going to label it as a 7 year old named James. Which, granted, fits entirely within the realm of what dissociation IS, but I can't help but wonder how many people fall into this category outside of the roleplayers we generally see in this thread.
This just goes to show that these folk don't even do the thorough research before faking/bastardizing it. It seems more like people fake to avoid responsibility and accountability than to garner attention. Can't tell you how many posts I've seen that go: "STOP BLAMING YOUR ALTERS FOR SHIT!!!!!!"
The DSM even has an entire section on fakers stating just that:

I met one person online who claimed they had DID but refused to call it a disorder, and they used terms like "headmate", "meatspace" and "terrafirma". They had names and fursonas for their alters. It was so cringey but I humored them so I could learn more. I hadn't been talking to them for very long, but it sounded like bullshit to me. I had a friend from highschool who was officially diagnosed with MPD and she actually showed signs of it, like the disassociating, childhood trauma, and memory loss.

Even says it’s not possible she repressed something. I feel bad for her therapist.

No matter how you feel about it, DID is very real, and rare. But still real, if you believe and understand dissociation, it's not hard to understand how DID comes into play.
