The phrase is just a marketing buzzword. Nobody who says it actually believes it. I have met some quite spectacular people throughout my lifetime who would be consdiered "diverse". Different ethnicities, different religions, different backgrounds, people who's differing perspectives informed one another rather that directly clashing. If you ever see it in action, a diverse group of people is capable of incredible synergy, highly adaptable, and for every weakness one person has there is another person who can be cycled in to account for it.

The way this phrase is used as a buzzword has nothing to do with that though. The way people's perspectives can interlock in a beneficial manner is overlooked or ignored. Its believed that if you force a bunch of disparate people together, then the magic happens. The reality is that its much more complicated than that. People need a reason to work together, something they can agree upon that makes them willing to put aside their differences and their egos. They also need a certain level of respect for each other's abilities, as well as a realistic judgment of their own and other's weaknesses.

There's no universal means of doing this though, its purely situational. Lacking that reason to cooperate, people will do what comes naturally to them and compete. Society is a machine, it must be engineered, cared for and maintained. The modern diversity movement is the equivalent of welding a bunch of scrap metal together that is vaguely the same shape as a car, and then being confused when it doesn't go anywhere. Essentially a cargo cult at this point.

Multiculturalism in the 21st century is only really sustained by a constant influx of immigrants. 1st generation and 2nd-generation child immigrants easily and willingly integrate into the dominant culture, or subculture, in whatever part of the country they're living in.

The problem is you want to have some sort of common grounds between the people in the group and that their diversity will actually pay itself off in adding ways to approach a problem. Do you want the real answer or the answer that the masses are to understand from it?

The masses understand "our" to mean "everyone" in a kumbaya sort of way.

The real answer is that it's the source of strength for the divide and conquerors, not unlike colonialism in africa or america where intergroup conflict was utilised to extend control.

It's why Amazon tracks and maintains diversity in their warehouses to minimize resistance.

Diversity isn't a strength on it's own - diversity is something that you deal with in order to take advantage of having a larger population or land you've taken from another group of people. The ethnic/religious tensions are just something you deal with in the process.
