I think you're on to something with the time preference bit, it seems there is a very bold line that divides those who take responsibility for their future and those who don't. The problem here is that you can't divvy these sides up into neet little political parties because that's just one aspect of a person's value system.I've been talking to progressives again, the free-market but a fair market people, and they keep bringing up this 'Gross National Happiness Index' Bhutan thing where politics is about maximizing average happiness in a society. Obviously I never got anywhere with them, but they didn't have anything to say back to my point about High vs Low Time Preferences. Which is kind of how some demographics spend their $1400 on stocks and other 'groups' spent it on Nikes. Someone with a high time preference focuses on his well-being in the present & someone with a low time preference focuses on his well-being in the future. Americans fuck this up with meme stocks and the 3,000+ stocks on NASDAQ being up only +0.69% Year-to-Date versus the coming inflation but in theory the 1400 put in stocks and not spent will still pay for Christmas this year if nothing else.
We just seem so bored with low time preference accomplishments that we don't even want to explore the stars anymore, we don't want struggle against anything to accomplish great things anymore. Just the leftist struggle sessions they have against the Great Internet National Socialism which always seems defined as something the average person actually agrees with. Like Trans-people in sports figuratively beating the shit out of women, and in some sports literally. Nobody is actually going to reverse Gay Marriage, and psych meds are easier to get than ever. We live in the soft times that make all men soft and weak.
Either way, my point in the arguments I've had is that happiness cannot be about self expression and gay marriage if the suicide rate has been only growing since 2000 (which surpassed Great Depression rates) and the highest rate of suicide idealization is among mized race people. People with low time preferences tend to not kill themselves, and people who act like Celebrities with their chemical dependencies and narcissism do. Firearms are hated most by suicidal people with a high time preferences who fear what they would do with them, and they put that on the 'Gun Culture' people with a low time preferences who collect and polish and shoot their guns at ranges with a strong hobby-group camaraderie that they've built up over years.
What do we do with the people with a high time preference, is there a way to prevent them during their childhood years or do we leave them be with easy access to guns to naturally sort themselves out? I think nature dealt with these people for us during earlier times in our civilization and we're just surrounded with them now because of our soft times make the soft men able to survive since the boomer era and compete socially with the low time preference people, am I wrong or is this just inevitable and what will it take before America gets to the hard times that sorts these people out for us? Is it China, SJWs collapsing America into warring pieces, or is there a softer route to dealing with these people's need for Social Democracy?
TL;DR: If the hard times which make hard men who make the soft times which make soft men who make hard times, around and around, what could the best-for-America end of this stage look like?
Likewise when it comes to racial topics, there are a hell of a lot of boomer republicans who essentially support blm light. They will talk tough about how democrats are the real racists, but then feel bad for the injuns, and blackies because they were "oppressed". They'll unironically come up with justifications for reparations.
The USA has no unified culture, we don't really even have 2 distinct cultures. We have a bunch of people who all believe randoms things often contradicting themselves in the process. This is part of the reason I don't buy any sort of civil war theory. People don't have enough in common to rally around, and even if they did they'd just splinter as soon as their common enemy was gone.
