It may sound as if we made this up, but we didn’t. Researchers from Innsbruck University in Austria studied almost 1,000 people and came to this conclusion: people who enjoy bitter food are nasty, bitter people.

Duplicitous. Self-serving. Cold-hearted. Vain, selfish, sadistic, narcissistic—even psychopathic. Turns out that the people who would be sorted into Slytherin have something else in common. They have a particular liking for tastes that the rest of us characterize as bitter. We’re talking about radishes and quinine, unsweetened cocoa and strong coffee.

How can we dox and fuck up the lives of these people?

They literally hate us and describe us as psychopaths just because of the food we eat.

I like my tea as black as my heart.

Does anyone take what Vice publishes seriously?
The article refers back to The Daily Fail.

Your run-of-the-mill serial killer may get some kind of thrill from eating bitter foods. After all, in the wild, plants that are poisonous tend to be bitter—and scientists say that may be why we non-psychopaths find bitter foods to be unappealing.

Let's check out the last meals of death-row inmates and see how much bitter foods they ordered.

For starters: Granny Smiths, black coffee, hoppy beers made for pre-refrigeration sailors, dark chocolate with salt, black tea, and all tart fruits.

Jesus, who the fuck wrote this?

A lot of Russian food is bitter/sour to make it complex (not a lot of "hot" or "spicy" ingredients native) and is really enjoyable. Same with black coffee, dark chocolate, etc.
Is it surprising that Vice's "source" is Daily Mail, with this headline?

Enjoy coffee or a gin and tonic? You could be a psychopath: People with dark personalities prefer bitter foods and drinks

I've noticed a theme with a lot of these "science says" articles from Vox-like "news" sources.
> study looks into a connection between two traits
> there's a positive correlation
> researchers post results
> troglodyte journalist reads only the headline
> "science PROVES that people who like bitter food ARE always bitter guyz!!! two studies say so!! people who like dark coffee are PSYCHOPATHS!!"
> posts garbage article
> repeat

Basically, it was a study of ~450 people, all results were self-reported. Are people who like bitter food probably "darker" than people who eat sugar all day? Maybe. But psychopathy is something different.

I think this is a bullshit conclusion, but I might just be sensitive because I'm a big fan of sauerkraut.

I know this thread is older than the Trump presidency, but since it's been necroed

Here's what I suspect was the paper that started all this.

Interestingly, the paper's authors found that a preference for sweet foods correlated positively with Agreeableness, thus proving that Americans - sugar obsessed fatasses to the last man - are actually the best people on earth. I wonder why Vice and the Daily Mail left that part out...?

This would make sense. Commie and socialist countries are full of psychopaths; that these countries would have a preference for bitter foods (borscht in Russia, coffee in France, etc) is predicted by the science.

I always thought it had more to do with weather. Not many spicy/sweet things grow in the cold (there's honey and fruit, but not much else), being cold makes you bitter.
Never visit Russia in autumn. As it gets darker every day, people get moodier.

One thing I was wondering about that study was whether or not they controlled for other variables, like race, gender, or ethnicity (the only one they mention is gender, but it's not clear if any effort was made to distinguish between gender-sex or gender-Tumblr).

If it's true that - say - Russians like bitter foods, then how do we know that the apparent correlation between bitter foods and psychopathy, isn't just a byproduct of an oversampling of Russians? And if Russians are actually psychopaths due to all the snow and darkness where they live, then does it even make sense to, as Sagioglou and Greitemeyer state in their Results, "(treat) taste preferences ... as a predictor of personality characteristics"? It seems like they're setting up the question in such a way that they're very likely to find the results they seek, regardless of what those results actually mean when considered with a broader view.

The study's authors are looking for "pathways of influence", but what if there is no pathway of influence here; what if psychopathy and bitter-taste preference just, coincidentally, happen to share a common association with Russians?

I'd like to think that this study is reliable and accurate, because fuck Commiefornian hipsters who drink coffee, but I guess we'll have to wait to see if it subsequent studies can replicate the results.

I love unsweetened chocolate
The 100% stuff. The one that tastes like the bottom of a trashcan in the summer. I love it. And I love to offer it to people and watch them suffer as the joy of getting free chocolate is washed away by pain.

I also love semen, super sweet things and very very sour. Roadkill, flesh wounds and gasoline also smell good.

People who unironically read Vice like bland flavorless soy-based foods. To this improperly researched article's credit, I like bitter foods and I'm a bit of an asshole. I love violently tangy Carolina BBQ sauce and put Dijon mustard on pretty much everything.
