I think a big transition was the Pirates of The Caribbean sequels, the fact that Davy Jones and his crew were all CGI and in reality just guys in grey suits blew everyone's minds and convinced Hollywood that practical effects were now totally obsolete, what once would have been done with make up effects and costuming was now all CGI and was virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, but this also was thanks to the talent of ILM and the tone that set later led to crap like The Thing reboot where the studio ditched the practical effects and replaced it with terrible looking CGI and that was half a decade later, so clearly it wasn't a universal leap.
And with that, coupled with the Iraq war being another Vietnam style debacle, the American dream in a fundamental way died, a lot of people deep down inside soured on the US and things only stayed relatively calm for a while longer because the left put all their hopes in Obama and his ability to "save us" but when that didn't happen either now there's an ever growing movement to completely dismantle the US and refashion it into a fundamentally different country by the left, including wiping away any and all respect for the Founding Fathers, the flag, the Constitution, Democracy itself, the US as a very basic concept in any way, shape or form, they want it gone, pulled down, burned down, paved over, you name it, they want it wiped away and the Earth salted on the very idea of "America"
Today they'd play the woman card, the fact that (at least the first movie) was directed by a woman, based on a book by a woman and starring an actress and geared toward a female audience they'd be playing the "it's sexist to say this sucks" card for all that it's worth if Twilight came out today.
I unironically think about that idea a lot.
The Transformers of the first film actually do look like their g1 counterparts for the most part, but to the untrained eye it might not immediately obvious with all the hyper-cgi detailing shit going on. Optimus looks like a lankier optimus, that's basic. megatron's a bit stranger because He's based on the sillouette of megatron's head repurposed into a gnashing space bugman head to fit the alien bug theme the designers were going for with the decepticons, bumblebee does this too to a much less obvious degree. Jazz looks like g1 jazz almost but painted all silver and isn't the same car, and dorito lord starscream's head seems to be a reference to waspinator of all fucking things. As the bayverse films went on shit got more name-slappy to an inexcusable degree in the later entries, and then there's the weird retroactive shit that went down, like how devastator on the merch was named brawl because I guess by the time the movie came out they managed to get an actual devastator combiner in the plans for the second movie. There's absolute dogshit going on with the bay transformers movies but the character designs in the early ones despite being visual clusterfucks are elaborately thought out visual clusterfucks.
With how many 2000s memes got fucking killed by reddit and knowyourmeme I've been actually surprised by the fact that some 00s memes somehow slipped through the cracks and died a peaceful death, some cases being completely memory-holed and ending up as lost content. Sometimes I bring these memes up in conversation and at least %0.1 of the times I do people actually know or remember the things despite some of them breaching significant popularity on a shitload of imageboard sites and forums back in the day. Small miracles are possible, but at a price, I guess.

Remember, the vast majority of normies may not have even encountered a wild SJW and even if they have, the vast majority couldn't give a shit less about them and their bullshit, and if they see some dangerhair weirdo ranting and raving about crazy bullshit, just ignore them. You mainly encounter these freaks if you inadvertently wander into one of their hives, or if you just like smacking them around in culture war shit for the sheer hell of it.
Interesting, I have noticed in some ways major changes culturally stopped after the late 90s, but I would say things didn't truly start to grind to a halt until the 2008 recession.
