Here is the thing, from what we can tell Barb is pretty much homebound lately, and sends Chris to pick up everything and she is in rather poor health. Does she have the energy to go to thift stores, yard sells and all that?

I am thinking that if Barb can't get out to build the hoard then Chris might be safe from living in another bug infested fire hazard. Then again, I am not an expert on hoarding, so I don't know if hoarders have a compulsive need to keep hoarding no matter if they feel like getting out, or not.

I've thought about this too. I don't think she can build another hoard as big as the old one. She will hoard again, however.

If Chris doesn't build the new hoard exactly to her specifications, she'll change the locks. Easy as that!

Hoarders aren't usually particularly active anyway. All she has to do is sludge around a goodwill store while her lapdog fills her cart. "CHRISHUN! GIT THOSE SLACKS! NOT THOSE, DODO BRAIN, THOSE! Ah hell, git em both."

She almost certainly will attemp to rebuild it from scratch. It'll take ages but she will devote herself to it.

She's like Smaug from the Hobbit.

It's gonna happen. It's already started. It's pointless to assume otherwise.

A better question would be whether or not Barb has the time left to hoard a new hoard. Hoards are like the mighty oak. They do not just happen overnight.

She hasn't the money, the life time left, the capabilities to go out and buy more crap, or a house for it, so, i say no, though, she and chris have the resources to make of his new house a dirty mess.

She won't have the energy to leave the house. I doubt it's going to happen.

Yeah, but Chris isn't really that much of a hoarder. Barb's a huge hoarder.

She'll find a way to coerce Chris into amassing shit for her. Send him on trips to the Goodwill and that stuff, ask him to buy her clothes or something. Let the pile build.

That's not really how hoarding works.

She could do a lot of it with general trash she gets in the mail.

Will she have "urges" to go to goodwill, like how some who tries to quit smoking needs a cigarette?

Re: Does Barb have the resources and energy to restart the h

Just because the old Hoard is gone doesn't mean there won't be a new one. Like someone else said, hoards don't start overnight. There are different ways to start a hoard... some people aren't really compulsive buyers but they are pack rats, and thus this kind of hoard is caused by not throwing away things, even stuff like expired/rotten food or garbage. Other hoarders do have the need to shop and accumulate things because they either are shopaholics and enjoy the thrill of buying things. Many hoarders are a combination of the two.

Barb will still want to hoard, and I have no doubt that she will start Hoard 2.0. How big this one will be, of course remains to be seen. It is a given that they will not clean up their new home well, and that is how a hoard begins. Chris has been Barb's chauffeur, he mentioned before driving her to thrift shops so I don't doubt she will ask him to drive her around. As poor as her health may be, she will still feel the urge to hoard, and maybe she is not as mobile as before, but she will still want to go to thrift shops and etc at least once in a while.

Re: Does Barb have the resources and energy to restart the h

Resources? Probably, with what they may get in compensation for what they lost and the fact that she seems to have obtained it via thrift shops.

Energy? No. She is in her seventies, she has a lot of health problems. Her mobility is limited and she may even be suffering depression.

It is possible she could send Chris out to acquire a new hoarde for her. But it isn't likely. He will probably acquire one of his own, though. And Barb will weep for joy and happiness that her boy is learning so well...

She does have Chris as an enabler, so that'll help.

Re: Does Barb have the resources and energy to restart the h

Brother, Barb probably does not have the energy to recreate the hoard. The hoard is, as the Ultimate Warrior would say, unrecreatable. It isn't like Hulkamania, which is so powerful that nothing can stop it. The fire would do nothing to stop the awesome force of Hulkamania. The hoard, however, is not as fortunate. It will stay buried by the ashes.

Barb will, in some way, keep hoarding, even if it's just empty soda cans and q-sand wrappers. It will never reach the level of The Hoard (R.I.P.), but it will be a hoard.

Re: Does Barb have the resources and energy to restart the h

I think there's no doubt that she'll continue to hoard what she can. That's something that doesn't become manageable without a lot of help and willpower and desire to change, and Barb's lacking in all three. (The fire might even exacerbate it.) It takes time to amass as much stuff as she had before, so I don't think it could ever get as large again, but the seeds will grow. My concern is that with her health and mobility being what they are, she'll switch from hoarding useless knickknacks she shops for to just flat out garbage. 14 BLC was a sty, but at least a lot of it was stuff. If her primary hoardable items start becoming things like boxes from food, napkins, used paper plates, etc. Hoard 2.0 could wind up being a lot grosser than 1.0 ever was even if it's a fraction of the size.
