I just thought of something here, Borb has no idea what autism is. Even though doctors might have told then some things about they seem to treat Chris like he's severely mentally retarded instead of just having some sensory issues and not understanding socialization. After all they though he was gonna be put in a nut house instead of a school catered towards children with autism.
Do you guys think Borb truely understands autism and what it means for their son?

i would probably say no. because once he was diagnosed and they heard something along the lines of "developmental disorder", they immediately thought he was a slow in da mind and raised him as such.
and he was probably "mainstreamed" because getting sent to a special school would be costlier.

No. Bob's mentality seems to have been to pretend Chris is normal, and that way he will be normal, unless Chris was "discriminated" against. Then instead of insisting Chris is normal he insisted he has da autism and they're being mean towards him for no reason! On the opposite end is Barb, who only seems to see Chris as an utter retard who can't do anything ever except be her special little boy forever.

The real question is - does Chris even know what autism is? Sometimes I think he really doesn't, when pressed the most he did was read off the autism article on Wikipedia without really understanding what it says. It seems that Chris thinks being autistic means being lonely and different all the time without realizing many of his problems are exacerbated by autism.

this. it sure seems like he and his family either have a very limited grasp of what autism is, or they both cherrypick from the symptoms as a given situation dictates

chris for one has indicated in the past that he believes it's something transient that he can overcome, but it's hard to tell if his parents put that idea in his head. it could just as easily be his own misguided idea or just plain ole wishful thinking

Barb and Chris know what it is, but over the years it's just become something they can blame things on or get sympathy points for. Other than that it's just a tugboat requisite.

None of them know what autism is. Not even Bob did when he was about.

None of them no what what autism is and neither do they care. Bob and :snorlax: are pure white trash murricans, the only thing that matters about CWC's autism is how it can benefit them and how they can take advantage of other ppl and systems with it, pure and simple.

to borb and chris, autism = free money and pity

Well, for Bob 'n' Barb, pity for Chris was only incidental and secondary to the pity that they were supposed to reap for being the beleaguered parents of a special-needs child.

On the opposite end is Barb, who only seems to see Chris as an utter exceptional individual who can't do anything ever except be her special little boy forever.

Doesn't either mindset involve getting somewhat invested in Chris and his interests? From what we know, there's precious little that Bob or Barb knew/know about their son (Bob had no idea what a "Sonichu" was, in one prank call, for example). You could probably say that's Chris lying and obfuscating his ass off, but really, it seems like they didn't really care that much about him.

The plain truth is that Bob 'n' Barb-still living in irrational fear of (the stigma of being attached to) mental disorders-just wanted to be left alone, without people screaming about their parental incompetence to their faces. And that usually entails not getting invested.

I'm sure they've had it explained to them back when they took Chris to that first fateful diagnosis. They just never did anything about it and assumed he'd grow out of it. Unfortunately for all involved, Chris's schools passed him through with honor roll grades, creating the illusion that he really did beat autism. I think the real wake-up call for Borb didn't come till PVCC.

I assume that Bob had some idea of it and was the one who put the faded, cracked autism bumper sticker on Son-Chu many years ago, but that Barb was and remains clueless about it.

They didn't send him to special aspie school because they could not face the stigma they thought they would feel (old-school social attitudes, remember) if the fruit of their love was a damaged subhuman retard. OMG! What would the neighbors think?

So, they kept him mainstreamed at all costs (literally) and in the end he became not just a damaged subhuman retard, but THE damaged subhuman retard. :stupid:

I've said this before here on the forum. We all know the Chandler family is lazy and half-asses things. Mainstreaming Chris was just the option that required the least amount money and effort. Now that he is out of the school system, what is the path that requires the least amount of effort? Tugboat. I look at the time he spent at PVCC as a way to get him out of the house. His family is lower middle class so I'm sure federal Pell grants paid for most, if not all, of his community college education. No effort on Borb's part. PVCC was also the "college' choice because it too required the least amount of effort. He was able to continue living at home while obtaining a CADD education that he'll never use.

To Borb it was/is(?) something that goes wrong in the brain and makes you get sent to Bedlam.

To Chris... let's hear it in his own words:

Are you ready to party?

I've been high and feelin' like an outcast, alright?
But let me tell you: I need some friends now, alright?
(’Cause) all of this time I’m livin’ alone!

A-U-T-I-S-M: what does it mean?
Silence and friends unseen!
A few brains as well: that is autism!
And that makes us seem special to you!

I'm lookin' at you all, and I see a rainbow, come on!
You think I'm different in every way, come on!
All of the times that I've earned honor roll!

A-U-T-I-S-M: what does it mean?
Silence and friends unseen!
A few brains as well: that is autism!
(And) that makes us seem special to you!

Oooh, oooh! Oooh, oooh!

All of the time that I've been alooo-oooo-ooooo-oooooone.

A-U-T-I-S-M: what does it mean?
Silence and friends unseen!
A few brains as well: that is autism!
And that makes us seem special to you!

so neither know anything about it.

EDIT: however after reading the lyrics chris made up, borb's assumption seems pretty accurate

I think they have a vague idea based on what they were told when Chris was first diagnosed, but that's probably become pretty warped over the years as it's obvious he had little to no follow-up treatment. They probably took away from it that Chris was a prodigy at some things but entirely helpless at others.

I live in a rural area and have volunteered with a lot of speds, and dealing with their parents is often the hardest part. They either think the kid is just weird if they're high functioning and a "bit slow/full blown tard" if they're not. They ignore so much shit that could help their kids because they just don't understand the reasoning behind it. Kids would would thrive in a sped class with individual attention get "mainstreamed" because their parents think they can just up their game and suddenly be normal, and it usually ends with the kid thinking they're the stupidest person on the planet, getting frustrated, and just giving up. I saw one girl go from entirely unable to function around other people able to go to university simply due to social therapy.

What I meant was that renting an apartment for Bob & Chris outside of the Greene County School Board's reach while Barb stayed at 14BLC doesn't seem like the Chandlers were penny-pinching. If anything, part of their post-graduation squalor may be because Bob & Barb's life savings were depleted from the exile.

The exile or the myriad lawsuits. Either/or/both.

So does the "a few brains as well" line mean he thinks people with autism have more than one brain?
