Hello fellow manajerks, jerkops, ding dang trolls and just curious onlookers on the continuing saga of fail that is Chris...

While I'm sure his mental diagnosis have been debated numerous times, I was wondering...
Is Chris really autistic?

Since his parents have stayed as far away from professionals and therapists as they could throughout Chris's life, the only time he was diagnosed as autistic, was before he was a teenager. The later examination, after his Sweetheart Hunt got him in trouble, was mainly based on the first diagnosis.
(According to the paperwork, the doctor didn't specifically test him for autism, but merely restated the old diagnosis.)

The original diagnosis was likely primarily based on Chris's expressive language delay, (he didnt start talking till 7, but could likely understand language.)

While an expressive language delay CAN be caused by autism, its far from the only possible cause. Mental retardation, which Chris seems to suffer from, is another one, for example.

Now, why wouldn't Chris, despite his extremely excentric, egocentric and dumb behaviours not be autistic?

For one, we have seen his behaviours detoriate over time. While this is likely caused by external influences (loss of gal pals for example) Autism doesn't get worse with time.

Secondly, Autistic people tend to have a poor understanding of social cues and behaviours. Interrupting in conversations for example, or talking the same way in different settings. Chris does this too some times, but it seems more based on egocentrism than anything else. When he's after something he wants (like china, sweet china!) he doesn't seem to have any problems with addressing different situations and settings in an appropriate way. For examples, just look at his chats with his Honest and True sweethearts, or the phone chat with Jackies father.

Thirdly, Autism is often categorized by things like social impairments, like the lack of nonverbal behaviours in language: Lack of gestures, eye contact and body postures. Does that sound like Chris? Hardly. (Just look at the claw if fail!) Singular and fanatical devotion to interests and a lack of imagination are also attributes seen in autistic people, compare that with Chris who quit drawing and vids when "the inspiration left him", but who can hardly be accused of lacking symbolism and imagination in play. (Sure, blatant copying in his imagination. But the point stands. Autists are more likely to be interested in concrete things: Like trains, rather than an imaginary though artistically ripped off wonderland like CWCville.

Chris is also able to understand other people's emotions, and he has no problems expressing his own, highly theatrical emotions. He knows that his actions can make other people sad, happy etc. The reason he seems to be lacking empathy is because he doesn't care that much and is highly egocentrical.

His problems seem to be caused more by borderline mental retardation, and a highly narcissistic and egocentric personality, but I kinda doubt he really is autistic.

Chris has autism for several reasons, the major one being the optional shot, but poor babysitting has been known to play a role as well. Follow the money, don't be sheep. Accept the truth.

Last I checked, he did. Just because he's Autistic, doesn't mean he didn't learn how to read emotions at some point.

If I've heard anything different, I think we'd have all known by now.

Yes he has Autism. Also, we aren't trolls here. We're Christorians. People who watch Chris. Not trolls.

Chris would beg to differ ;)

And I just don't see the Autism. At least he most likely wouldn't be diagnosed as one today. B&B just took the first and best explanation for why he was "difficult" and "different", rather than something more likely but also much more unpleasant for people of their generation: Like Chris suffering from borderline retardation or that they did a piss poor job of raising him.

I totally believe that Chris has a lot of underlying issues in addition to autism. I even think that if Chris was diagnosed today, rather than years ago, the diagnosis might have been something different. We can speculate all we want, but at the end of the day the only person with the power to make a conclusive diagnosis is a licensed professional who has dealt with Chris in a clinical setting.

Chris, at one point in his past, was diagnosed with autism. That diagnosis was considered legitimate enough to make him eligible for federal disability payments. Until we are made aware that that diagnosis has changed, we have to assume that it was the correct one.

Chris suffers from autism. However that's mostly because of the autism.

I think Chris's complete lack of theory of mind is one of the more persuasive arguments that he has autism. Not to mention his various sensory weirdnesses.

I believe that he is suffering from autism but lord knows that over the years, he might have been suffering from a piss poor mental and physical health.

Ahh, but au contrarie... He doesn't seem to lack in that regard.

He completely ignores how other people are likely to feel and react the majority of the time, but that's more likely brought on by extreme narcissism.

An example... When he got banned from Game Place, did he walk in the next day or the week after, as if nothing had happened? Far from it. He waited over a year, before he tried going back, and tried to persuade Snyder with apologies and playing to his pity to be let in.

Another example: The phonecall with Jackies father. Chris is deferential to him, acts polite and lies (well tries to lie. He IS an awfully poor liar...) to try to appear as a somewhat suitable mate. He understands what's expected of him, and how he can act to appear as more agreeable in the fathers eyes. Chris seems to understand how other people perceive him and what they're likely to think most of the time. (Especially when he is after something). He just seems to ignore it most of the time, probably as a combination of laziness and egocentrism.

Yes, he has autism, and he has shown various symptoms of it, i don't think he has asperger syndrome, or as he calls it: "high-functionin autism" because well, he's a really fucked up person to have it, but even if he has aspergers or autism, it's pretty obvious that he has more emotional and psychological problems, he has shown pretty strong symptoms of paranoia, sociopathy and dementia...

If he ain't autistic, who is? He's not as severely affected as people who never learn to talk or those that are completely unable to function in society, but the description fits him like it was sprayed on (a'la Axe).

A series of spectacularly bad decisions by his parents usually know as "his childhood" didn't help him. At all. With the proper help and motivation, he could have risen above the disease and become a functional, functioning adult -- but it didn't happen and it ain't going to.

Oh yes indeedy indeedy doo he's autistic.

@DJAndy: Autism is precisely a mental health issue, like being crippled is a physical health issue. By definition, having one means you have the other.

@Fapcup: his narcissistic behavior is because he doesn't understand how other people think. Both your examples bear this out. "That guy can't walk because his legs don't work." "No, he can't walk because of a motorcycle accident." The behavior follows the condition, not the other way around.

Look, all autistic people are not the same. Firstly, because their underlying (sans-autism) characteristics are different, and secondly, because autism-spectrum disorders come in different forms.

Basically that means that because Chris does display many characteristics of autism, doubt can't really be cast by counter-examples. He may be capable of some things other autistic people aren't, because his particular disorder doesn't affect those things.

Also, keep in mind that many people with learning disabilities learn to imitate neurotypical behaviours because it allows them to fit in and has other benefits for them. In the Father Call for example, Chris might be being deferential because he has learned through observing the world that that is how he should act, or he has found that in similar situations in the past, being deferential was useful.

Autistic people have often difficulty with empathy. It doesn't mean that on an intellectual level, they don't know that there are other people with feelings, and that figuring it out and acting upon it is a good idea. It just isn't as instinctual.

Chris may have many emotional/mental issues, but it seems virtually inconceivable to me that he doesn't have something on the autism spectrum

Asperger syndrome is a form of HFA, but a person can have HFA without having Asperger syndrome. He isn't an aspie at all -- they don't ever get the childhood delay in speech development, for one thing. But he can talk, knows how to drive (sometimes over people, but hey) and knows when he doesn't have enough money to buy something he wants and is forced -- forced! -- to pilfer a credit card. He doesn't sit in a corner drooling on his shirt all day as far as we know, so he's definitely HFA.

Agreed on the other problems, though. I think originally he had one problem (autism) then his parents cleverly used it to give him all his other problems. What happened to him during childhood / adolescence is known in formal medical terms as the "dumber than a box of rocks" approach to therapy.

Also: does anyone besides him and Barb believe for one second that a sadistic babysitter's torture ever happend, or had anything at all to do with his problems? Me neither.
