Does prolonged internet celebrity turn people into cows? -

I've been noticing more and more that when people become e-famous they slowly but surely start to develop more cow-like qualities. In my own personal experience I have seen two seemingly normal people (Sargon and Andy Warski) become absolute cows after being prominent YouTubers for some time, and I feel if I did some digging I would find similar stories come out of other communities and sites (e.g. Spoony comes to mind). Am I the only one who holds this view? If I'm correct, what is it about being an e-celeb that you think turns otherwise functioning people into absolute speds? More importantly, what consequences would that mean for prominent E-celebs whose content we tune into regularly? Are they destined to become cows, or can they avoid such a fate?

They were never normal in the first place. Once they became popular, they became comfortable and dropped the act.
That's basically the same thing though. They weren't as ridiculous when they first started out as they are now, so by all standards you could call them functional back then.

They seemed functional in their 10 minute video. After they turned it off they were probably their spergy selves. People try to present their best to the public, once you get comfortable with a following you stop worrying so much.

Fame (if you can call it that) probably made them more entitled but they had always been exceptional imo.

This comes up a lot when discussing DSP and there's actually a term that sort of fits him and most lolcows perfectly:
https://www.nytimes.com/2001/12/09/...s-a-to-z-acquired-situational-narcissism.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism#Acquired_situational_narcissism

Acquired Situational Narcissism isn't officially recognized but has been discussed within the field of psychiatry for some time. Basically once a person encounters fame and has every moment of their life plastered everywhere they can become hugely narcissistic.

The term came up around 2000 before smartphones and Twitter so its probably even more recognizable now.

I have no idea why Twitter seems to be the worst platform though; I'd always thought YouTube and livestreaming would be the absolute worst but from everything I've seen Twitter is worse than Reddit/YouTube/Twitch/FurAffinity combined.

Your avatar shows you already know the answer
I'm pretty sure he was already exceptional coming out of the womb.

So would you say certain people are more susceptible to it, or is it more a development that happens to all personality types randomly?

In your experience, do you find blue checkmarks to be more narcissistic than average plebs? I don't use Twitter, in part because I think the site absolute cancer.

It's like most kinds of fame. Keanu Reeves seems to be very grounded and chill, despite his insane success and stardom. I think it depends alot on the personality you had before you became 'famous', and when it happens. I like to think the older you are before it hits you (are there any sane child stars?), the better you might take it, but that was before I learned about people like Maddox.

I think its random. Its like if a hostage situation took place, most people will tell you (or at least think internally) that they'd be different and overpower the guy with an assault rifle and a canister of ricin strapped to his back and save all the beautiful virgin women.

The reality is hearing stress and criticism on a constant basis (like an internet celebrity might get) will affect people in completely different ways. There's not really any way to predict it because most people never have a situation in their lives where such a wide audience is watching them so closely.

I think age of fame also has something to do with it. Michael Jackson was totally fucked but Keanu Reeves didn't get into acting until he was like 20. Upbringing and social structure probably also affect it greatly.

If its a young celebrity who gets the right guidance at just the right moment they'd probably do ok. For others they might completely eschew any advice given to them and start smoking crack rocks every morning.

I noticed you mentioned earlier that this would come up when discussing DSP. Am I to assume that DSP was less of cow earlier, because Fredrik Knudsen kinda implied he was always an asshole.

It depends on the person and what they're famous for.
What type of e-celeb genre do you think is most susceptible to becoming a cow?

I feel like it doesn't really turn people into cows by itself more than it does accelerate the process of that person turning into a cow, as it gives them a sense of entitlement which both makes any criticism of them even less effective and gives validation for their behavoir/beliefs.

Many of the biggest lolcows there are (Chris Chan, DarkSydePhil, Brianna Wu) would still be lolcows even if they weren't e-famous.

It sure as shit does not help. It warps your view or reality, and makes you over focus on whatever comes across your screen, as you begin to see that as reality.

Then again the argument that could be made that all of this is the chicken or the egg kinda thing. Those that seek out to become e celebs were already attention whores and cows in waiting.

Your avatar is an example of somebody who was already a little off, but gained a lot of popularity for it, which I don't think really helped his state of mind.
