I really like the idea that a story character knows that they're in a game and then starts fucking with other characters and the player. I think you could do a lot with that idea, even outside visual novels.

Fandom is cancer though, no surprises there.

So far, I've just been chilling with Monika After Story. It's basically a huge upgrade to the original game's third act. You get to spend time with Monika and talk to her about a lot of different subjects. She has a lot of interesting to stuff to talk about, and it's quite comforting. You can also play little games like Pong and Hangman (). I've been checking on her regularly now.

The only mod I really know of is the one I linked earlier, where Monika and you work to save the other girls from the game itself, i.e. break them from the tragic end the game puts them on and give them a happy one instead.

I just looked into it, and I'm definitely going to have to give it a shot some time. I don't really feel like going through the whole game again at the moment for the true ending, so it'll be a while.

I managed to play/read it without any spoilers aside from "dis scurry gaem". I think it's pretty good. Not outstanding or anything, but I like psychological horror, and it scratched the itch. Right off the bat knew Monika was sketchy as fuck from appearance and how the other girls described her. It's a good jab at how weebs play VNs for the sake of waifu fanservice and tries to play on you not thinking about them being "real", playing them etc. Undertale really generated a lot of those themes of psychological horror in games lately, and while now it's a little dull, it's still enjoyable.

So I finally played this. Somehow of all things I don't wanna get spoiled (very few), I had never been spoiled by this game, so I go in very invested.

My heart is halfway pounding (I faint easily at medicinal situations, to put it nicely), and that scene just knocked the air out of me.

Then the video game glitching happened and I just lost all interest. Game absolutely deflated. Here was a chance at a really, really dark game touching on some messed up things in a genre that doesn't at all contain them usually. Will the others spiral into something too? I kinda figured there'd be knife-play or hurting involved, so figured that was the case.

Instead it just became creepy-pasta bait and an absolute waste of time. I had some videos going at the pace I was going at on the side, which quickly made me click onto those 45-min explanation videos when I realized what kind of game I was playing, and it was nothing but easter eggs and references. There had to be something unique to this game, else people wouldn't love it so, right?

Nope, just a twist in an unlikely genre. Hell, even her sudden confession about depression made no sense. I thought it was a generic "I actually love you" plot, which it must've been had she not been "hacked", so the depression part was either a smart red flag and foreshadowing of how things aren't predictable, or just super poor writing. Who knows.

I went for Yuri from the start since I found the three others could all be lumped together, when dating sims usually have every stereotype covered. The confession really had me backtracking and considering, but against my nature I just kept going. Again, going back to all this and not going with Yuri, the game seemingly forces you into some amount of investment with her, just to bait you into that knife scene.

Overall an okay game, but could've fit in a 90 minute sonic.exe-esque format over "Hey this is a game ". I had hoped for an introduction to VNs; this wasn't it.

I really don't like gore-for-the-sake-of-gore or cheap jumpscares. Yes the atmosphere and music had me turning it off near the end, but I guess I can credit them for no actual jumpscares. I would've still liked actual psychological horror; the others revealing things in the wake of suicide, going full knife-in-chest psycho but with an actual reason. Breaking down, all in the light of a dating sim, of all genres.
