Going by his series of tweets, it wasn't a mistake. It was deliberately a low blow which is really the only problem I have with it. Everyone's got something wrong with them, either in their head or on the outside, and it's just a dick thing to do to go for that kind of a little jab at the person criticizing you when it has nothing to do with what they said.

I doubt they'd care what he has to say, so why not take them down a peg with a quick jab and playing it cool as they foam from the mouth because he won't play pretend with them? Since they always include Bible passages with their life lessons on Veggie Tales:

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. (Matthew 7:6)

Found a salty af article on The AV Club. They even quote 9volt:
AV Club said:
Earthworm Jim creator pops up to remind Twitter of his transphobic views
By William Hughes

Earthworm Jim maintains a healthy, nostalgic niche in the minds of video-game fans of a certain age, perpetually charmed by the heroic annelid, his lushly animated and bizarre world, and a whole horde of flying cows. But the increased access to creators (and, more dangerously, their innermost thoughts) brought on by Twitter has been rough on the oddball franchise, mostly thanks to the work of the character’s creator, artist and designer Doug TenNapel. In what’s just the latest in a long line of anti-LGBTQ statements and stances, TenNapel recently responded to a critical article about the games by mis-gendering its author—Heather Alexandra, a.k.a. @transgamerthink—on Twitter, and then doubled down, implying that Alexandra suffers from “madness” and that her article was a “passive aggressive hit-piece.”

TenNapel’s views are a matter of public record, especially since 2013, when he launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to produce a sequel to his beloved adventure game The Neverhood. People searching through his past Twitter activity—not to mention his contributions to Breitbart—were quick to find statements attacking gay marriage and gay rights, almost always from the position of “white Christian males are the real victims here.” The disconnect between TenNapel’s opinions and the charms of his work kicked off another of the internet’s periodic bouts of “art vs. artist,” which faded as TenNapel himself receded from the spotlight, retreating to the quiet safety of his role executive producing Netflix’s VeggieTales TV show.

Still, when Alexandra posted her thoughts on Earthworm Jim’s game design on Kotaku, TenNapel wasted little time in attacking her in the most predictable, passive-aggressive way possible, while simultaneously calling for an “open discussion” and end to passive-aggression. He’s since spent the day quoting and retweeting people agreeing with him and telling him how great he is, all in that “I’m happy to have a calm discussion about how wrong and triggered you are” attitude favored by those who actively attack people under the guise of “just telling the truth.”

I'm not super into the legitimacy of trans identities or the people that enable them, BUUUUUUUUUUUT at the same time Doug calling Heather "man" was a deliberate effort to be an asshole.

In all fairness are you going to be civil to someone who saw an easy hitpiece and wrote a bunch of stuff assuming the attitudes of a team you worked with to make a product? I know everyone focused on a few tweets but Doug's issue seemed to be the fact this person assumed the nature of the dev team without contacting anyone (because they likely knew deep down it would mess with their narrative)

That and technically by misgendering he gives this transtrender the 24 hours of backpatting they were likely looking to get out of it. He played their boogieman and they likely enjoyed having something to grouse about, everyone wins

earthworm jim owns bones but even if it didn't, what have "9 Volt" and the gang ever produced? nothing worthwhile or notable, that's for sure.

noticing the obvious = low blow, apparently

I would call it low effort bait, personally. But LGBT fish are pretty easy to catch, so it doesn't matter.

It's actually a shame, I would have loved to hear an actual interview. But both parties clearly didn't really care about that and were happy to do the twitter dance instead.

The best thing to come out of the series was the animated show that most people aren't even aware of.
Off-topic, but I thought I was the only one who remembered the cartoon version of Earthworm Jim. It came on every Saturday morning on the WB network after "Freakazoid" in the mid-1990s (1995 to 1996 to be exact). For anyone who wants to see a typical episode, I recommend "Sword of Righteousness" (link here: http://www.watchcartoons.com/watch/earthworm-jim/season-01-episode-007-sword-of-righteousness)

Fun fact: the voice of Earthworm Jim in the cartoon is the same guy who plays Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta).

The "Transphobe" card is suffering from the same problem that the race card is having, overuse and an ever creeping definition of what constitutes the bigoted behavior in question to the point that anything and everything that hurts your feelings is on par with getting lynched or forced to use segregated water fountains.

A real "phobia", I think we can agree, means when irrational and untrue beliefs about the nature of another person or group of persons is used to justify violence and a denial of civil rights, as in the once-accepted (and still pretty popular) idea that all gays are pedophiles and that it's perfectly fine to tie a gay man to a fence and beat him to death if he comes on to you because his behavior was "unnatural" to the point that he needed put down like a rabid dog.
It doesn't mean a person who is uncomfortable with gay people chooses to call them "weird" while not actually wanting to harm them or doing anything that does harm them. Oh, but "words hurt", yeah, they do, but guess what? Everyone gets mocked for something, be it their looks, their hobbies or their politics. Mockery is a fact of life and it's not doing you any good to insinuate your "group" can't take it any more than a the model train hobbyist of the world get called autistic manchildren. They survive unharmed.

ANd I mean real harm, as in directly injured them or denied them a civil right, not "hurt my feelings" or "didn't retweet me".

"Transphobia" used to mean the same thing, I'd wager. But now, thanks to excessive troonery, it means "didn't support me" or "didn't immediately and passionately get on my side of the argument" and the same kind of venom you should be saving for the people who DO tie others to fences and beat them to death is now being unleashed on people who while they would never ever in a million years do you any actual physical harm, are simply judging you as silly and deluded. That's it.

Mocking indifference is not the same as wishing you dead, but the fee fee generation can't draw that line, they've been told they're so special that being called a name IS just the same as a baseball bat to the head.

Ironically, their being pushy and militant about it is going to earn one of them somewhere a REAL bat to the head that had they not been such toxic and intrusive people, wouldn't have otherwise happened. And no, I don't think whoever swings it will be justified, I'd still convict them if on the jury, but, like walking down a dark alley and getting mugged, you shouldn't create a chance for someone else to victimize you, and you can prattle on about freedom of choice all you like, but their approach to these kinds of things is assuming your neighbor smashed your stereo because he hates Mozart and all classical music fans, not that you wouldn't turn it down at 2am.
