Everything in that spoiler is much less what I understood drag to be than the way I imagine certain Lovecraftian horrors

Yeah, to me they seem much more interested in being creative beauty makeup artists than drag queens. At least traditional ones, who are exaggerated women, not space aliens. Of course, all I know about them is these photos.

I like it, don’t get me wrong. That’s some gorgeous makeup. But is it what they perform in?

As far as that mom who dressed her kid in blackface-I cannot imagine what era she believes she’s living in. Why the kid couldn’t dress as him without the dark skin would be my first question-I mean, he’s not going to look like him either way so why bring down the wrath of a whole continent on you?

I wish we were actually were living in a post racial era, but we aren’t. Black face is never going to be taken as a compliment, balls or no.

Some of them do, like Cheddar Gorgeous's photo was from one of her performances. It all depends on the queen and how physically involved their performances are. A queen who does super crazy dancing is probably going to have a much different style of drag from a queen who can't or doesn't go all acrobatic. For example, Alyssa Edwards:

She's a professional dancer, so her costumes tend to lend themselves towards that sort of physical demand without losing that glamor you'd expect from a drag queen.

This is Anna Phylactic. I've never seen her performances, but it's likely a safe assumption to say that she isn't going to be doing the same sort of stuff that Alyssa would be doing. Both of their costumes are visually interesting, but come from two very different types of drag.

Photo sessions, of course, give the queens a chance to go even further out if they're so inclined. It really does vary queen to queen.

In one sense, being a drag queen seems to be more sensible than being openly transgender. It will save you the cost of an operation, a legal name change, and a lifetime of drugs. All you really need are clothes and makeup, and any passable trans person will already have these. Plus, drag queens don't worry about misgendering. They call themselves "trannies", know they're male, and use the men's restroom even in full drag. RuPaul doesn't care what pronoun you use for him. And at the end of the day, they wash it all off and go about their days without forcing anything down anyone's throat.

But on the other hand, drag queens are quite obnoxious and irritating. Compare someone like Blaire White or even Caitlyn Jenner to someone like Leigh Dorei (who shows his nipples on Public YouTube) or Jeffrey Star (known for his overacting).

It's one of the great tragedies of the all pervasiveness of American media that they exported their particular brand of racism around the globe and subsequently their view of what is racist or not.

That his hero had a problem with it is unfortunate, but it isn't in itself a universal given that every non white person has a problem with it.

I was referencing an article written in Perth (posted last page) saying there was a nation-wide backlash to it. It was not American media.

I’ve no clue what brand of American racism has been picked up around the globe as opposed to what any one country invented for themselves either. Racism wasn’t invented here, and snowflakes are global too.

The article also didn’t say a nation-wide backlash amongst whites or non-whites.

There was a recent article in England about one of the royal family wearing a “blackamoor” broach, which apparently has racist overtones. People in England were very upset, people in the US had never heard of this particular jewelry before and most probably never heard of it. Megan Markle, who it was supposed to embarrass, didn’t even notice it and later said, and I paraphrase, “so what?”

TL;dr, Every country has its own racist peculiarities and insults, and some people are offended and some are not. In my mind, wear the jewelry, paint your kid, just know there will be consequences.

Yes, in a world where gender dysphoria doesn't exist, no one ever passes and transgenderism is a fetish, this might be true.

We aren't living in such world though.

...we are also living in a world where you can get beaten and bullied just for looking androgynous even though you're presenting fully male. In such countries, it's more dangerous to be in drag then try to pass. In most countries, being misgendered is among the least of concerns of someone who is gender-non-conforming-even if they do it as a joke and use male restrooms.

Drag makeup is interesting because you can usually clock someone's background from how they apply it. The performers who look really weird close up are often those with some sort of theater background who are painting for the stage and not photographs. Then there are a lot of young queens who can paint for photos but not for stage. It is rare to find someone who can do both. They either look like a clown in photos or a blob on stage.

I (sort of) get that the appeal is supposed to be exaggerated stage makeup, but it comes out more horrifying than satisfying.

What gets me is the people shitting on christians as bigoted yet celebrate the religion that is a fanfic of Judaism and Christianity while also being homophobic and conservative as the former two.

Someone who got mad at Goldblum was all "muh Christianity, other drag queens have used Christian imagery" but Islam and Christianity are now radically different in how they treat gays.

Yes, some or most Christians still don't accept them, but in society gays aren't thrown of of buildings - which is what you find in Islamic countries.

The reason everyone is so defensive of Islam is because some immigrants are Middle Eastern or Muslim and progressives fly off the handle if any criticism of their culture is brought up, especially on Rupauls. I could shit out literal iron and it still wouldn't match up to this - it's an insult to Islam and to gay men and women. It's incredible.

Here's what one drag queen dressed up as when the category was "Stars and Stripes".

Because nothing is more American than a woman wearing a towel and a headscarf - naturally people were pissed when guest judge Jeff Goldblum asked if Islam was anti-gay and anti-woman.
Jackie's outfit made sense because she's Persian and comes from a family of immigrants, so it was a very personal take for her. It was a controversial take, sure, but that's what makes drag fun. I preferred it over Gigi's redcoat quaker oats look. It was a beautifully constructed garment, but didn't really fit the theme and came across like her idea of redcoats quakers came from Captain Hook. If she had gotten rid of the feather, and if the coat were blue and white (or green and white, or blue and red, or brown and white, or literally any other combination that didn't involve a red coat), then it would have been perfect for 18th century American military drag.

Yes, it makes sense for Jackie but it makes no sense to any Muslim or gay man. You're presenting Islam as compatible with gay men, which is of course impossible. I understand the angle of she's doing it because Muslims have a place in America but it comes at the whole cost of, y'know, gay men don't belong in Islam. Plus it's a little offensive to Muslims because Muslim women wouldn't wear something that tight fitting, the clothing they wear (I forgot the name) is supposed to be loose because Islam forbids women to show anything actually attractive about them.

I honestly like the little red coat, I'm not gonna lie I haven't watched this season and I'm not a big a fan of Drag Race as I was before, but just looking at it I think it's cute.
