Drag is interesting as a form of theater. Queens do some crazy shit with makeup and costuming, and from, say, a LARP perspective, there's a lot to learn from them. I've used drag queen tutorials to help create character makeup.

Agreed it's fun when it's purely comedy/entertainment and treated as such. It's not meant to be PC either. It's men wearing wigs and heels and ridiculous outfits and making dick and balls jokes.

Bianca is the only tolerable drag queen and I think it's because he's one of the oldest and can see through everyone's bullshit. I really doubt Bianca would do that kind of thing honestly, and if she has, I've lost all hope for the drag scene.

Historically, it's not and it has never been. You'll find queens and kings who are, but that doesn't mean all of them have to be. It's silly to try to force them all into that box, but that's what happens when their only exposure to drag is RuPaul's Drag Race and Instagram queens.

I'm one of those that really only knows queens through drag race (I live in the middle of nowhere and avoid the club scene like the plague) but has anyone else noticed a pattern that the drag race queens who go on to transition tend to be the mediocre/ filler queens? They almost never win a challenge before they get the boot and are half-assed performers.

Jiggly Caliente, Honey Mahogany, Gia Gunn (who spent most of both seasons she was on projecting on the other queens that they looked like men compared to her) Carmen Carrera...the furthest any trans queen has gotten in the competition is second place with Peppermint, but that last minute formula change could have meant she avoided being trounced by the other three tops and throughout the competition she was noted for substandard fashion choices and saved herself with her lipsyncing skills. Shes probably the most likeable of the bunch too but I can't forgive her involvement with that Jazz Jennings trainwreck.

I'm slightly ashamed that I have an opinion on this, but IMO, Bianca has been the best Drag Race winner. It's hard to know how much of that was the edit, but she came off as a funny, seasoned performer who was skilled not just as a performer but as a craftsman. (Those seamstress skills. Daaamn.)

As far as Drag Race, the "fishy" queens seem to be the nuttiest or most damaged. They usually have one trick--their looks--and flounder in other challenges. When your whole focus is on looking like a biological woman as much as possible, it's no wonder they end up with weird gender issues.

Comedy queens like Bianca Del Rio or Trixie Mattel come across as more down-to-earth. They're very aware that they're putting on a show. Performing queens (the singers and dancers), ditto. The "art" queens like Milk tend to be weirder and harder to take in large doses, and they don't usually get very far in the competition. The fishy queens are fucking nuts.

Bio queens remind me of surrealist art. It's an interesting idea (paint a real thing to look like a poor copy of a real thing), but it's hard to know what to do with it.

Then you have the SJW crowd/teenagers/kids infiltrating it and that's where it gets really autistic.

They travel the world to meet the queens and treat them like The Beatles.

I'll powerlevel and add I've seen Bianca live and she's funny as hell. She made some marginally off-color joke and a white woman in the audience stood up and started screeching and chimping out for like 10 minutes about her being "racist," and Bianca told her to fuck off as everyone laughed at the cow. It was a delight. The woman even stormed out.

You've got lots of dumpy housewives, autistic teenagers and shut-ins coming to Drag Con and related festivals and events instead of it just being a bunch of fags and a few curious normies like it used to be. Alaska Thunderfuck is the person in my avatar doing Charles Manson cosplay years ago, which I personally found hilarious but I'm a sick fuck.
