Drawing Hands -

I've been having a lot of fun with figure and gesture drawing recently, and I feel like i'm making some pretty good progress, but I can't draw hands for shit. Everybody I draw has some kind of Danny Devito Penguin genetic malady that makes their arms terminate into these weird little paddles.

Occasionally i'll draw one hand that looks not so shamefully bad, but then fuck it up trying to match it with another.

Can anyone link me up with some good hand drawing tutorial resources?

I'll work on my dinky little Rob Liefeld feet later.

As someone who loves drawing hands, I learned on my own that using my own non-drawing hand in a quick-fix helps as you can see it first-hand (*rimshot*) how it looks from all sorts of angles, even more-so when you use a mirror. 'Course, looking up references on Google Images or asking someone to model for you doesn't hurt. It more-or-less relies on observance since hands do differ from person to person despite sharing the same basic shapes.

One thing I remember from life drawing classes was that a lot of people (myself included) would initially draw hands as much smaller than they really are in proportion to the rest of the body.

Man, when I was younger, I usually just left hands off unless I had too. Then I just did four-fingered hands, which looked off compared the the proportions I was attempting.

Nowadays, while I still think hands are hard to do (and downright impossible with some poses). I can at least say I draw them with five-fingers.

I once met a guy whose art portfolio consisted of almost entirely hand drawings, damn good ones too. When I asked him about, he said, "Eh, it's not that hard. It's not like I have to look hard for a model."

The "trick", like pretty much everything in art, is just to practice it, sadly. You got two hands and only need one to draw, get to sketching.

I am so envious right now that I may just need to preemptively turn myself into the Salt Mine.

I have a bad habit of leaving hands and feet in their drafted square/triangle shapes, then only adding the most minimal detail so that they at least somewhat resemble what they're supposed to be.

They are the least enjoyable parts of the body to draw. That, and hair.

I find there's no shame using your own hands as a reference, just remember to adjust the proportions according to the character you draw. Generally though, I like to do a quick scribble first for the general hand pose I want to do, then proceed with drawing the hand\palm as a pentagonic shape, then add the fingers before doing all the finishing touches. It's also helpful to keep general points in mind, like the middle finger is the longest, the pinky connects to the palm a lot lower than the rest of the fingers, all that good stuff.

Blind contour drawings are a great way to start practicing. Also consider the thumb more like a thimble attached to a spool in shape rather than a finger-like protrusion. Itll make sense when you start drawing it
