Today my mom and I talked about getting me driver's license. She brought up how it took my aunt three times to pass the test.

I wonder, how many times did you think it took for Chris to pass the test? As A-loggy as this might sound, there's no way he got it on the first try.

If he went to driving school he would not of had to. Its what I did, i paid 300 bucks, they took me out driving twice and gave me a paper to turn in to get my license.

I think Maryland's a lot more stringent, but driving school is a requirement here. Or, rather, not necessarily driving school, but you need to drive with a certified driving instructor for a certain number of hours. And I think you still have to take a test.

Maybe. I did it in Arizona and the instructor uad a checklist. All I had to do was get the checks and he gave me the paperwork for my license.

Learner must hold permit for nine months and log 45 supervised driving hours, 15 of which must be at night. Under 18 may not carry more than one minor passenger for the first six months of being licensed and no more than three passengers until reaching age 18. All minors subject to a curfew between midnight to 4:00 a.m. until reaching age 18.

Although maybe because of Chris' tard-ness he didn't get his license until later. And I think if you're older when you get your license they aren't as stringent? Maybe? I don't know.

If you are age 19 or older, and you have never held a driver's license issued by Virginia, another state, a U.S. territory, or foreign country, or cannot show proof that you previously held such a license, you must show proof that:

- you have passed an approved driver education course, or,
- you have held a Virginia learner's permit at least 60 days before taking the DMV road skills test.

Chris turned 19 in 2001, during which time, he was driving regularly to PVCC and (to a lesser extent) his job at Wendy's. I'd imagine he got the license straight out of high school, if only because Bob 'n' Barb didn't want to chauffeur him anymore.

I was a special little snowflake who didn't get their driver's license until 23. I live in Indiana and they have a lot of what I think are dumb laws until you're 18, like no passengers for the first 3 months (unless its someone over 21 with a license), must hold a learners permit for 2 months and I know if you quit high school you loose your license (under 18 only). However, when I passed the test I was immediately able to drive with just my 3-month old son in the car (I didn't for the first month or so), I wasn't limited to who I could practice driving with when I had the learners permit (just someone, anyone with a valid license. The under 18's had to have family members teach them, I would have been in deep doo-doo then.) They didn't give two craps if I was in school or not. (I had already gradated college) Over 18, its just get that license and be on your merry way.

^Borb sure knew how to work the system.

Their luck may have run out on this front, however, as Borb may have actually had to help Chris learn to drive.

So many Sunday drives, so many jitters, so many impromptu seatbelts...

I had an un-medicated Bipolar woman as my instructor when I went to take my test who had a panic attack towards the end of it (I later found out that I wasn't the first new driver she's freaked out at). I had to take the test another six times before I passed and I still can't go into ICBC without getting sick.

Chris either got really lucky or Borb knew how to threaten the right people.

To me,this has always been the stand out inconsistency in Chris' life. How can somebody so uncoordinated, so stupid, and so incapable of performing the most basic of actions be legally allowed to drive a vehicle?

I have to say, I always thought that Chris being able to drive was just evidence that he's perfectly capable of achieving goals if he genuinely wants something. And his total lack of life progress in other areas was purely down to sheer laziness, and his belief that he's exempt from the trials and tribulations that the rest of us lesser humans have to go through on a daily basis.

i can't even see him even attempting to parallel park.

and didn't he get in a fender bender because he was "contemplating a math question"? sounds like utter bs.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. I suggest fistfuls of Neurontin chased with many beers, to give you that in-between feeling similar to having taken no drugs at all.

It varies from state to state. All I had to do (back in the Pre-Cambrian) was pass a stupid written test (maybe 20 questions) to get a learner's permit, then come back two weeks later to take a driving test. I showed up at 8 AM for the driving test the first day I could, and at that hour there was no one parked on the street to parallel park behind. Ho ho.

One thing that really sucked was the Dad had taken the Oldsmobile to work, big sister took the Chevy to school, and the pickup wouldn't start so there was nothing left in the driveway to take the driving test in but Dad's new Porsche. I sooooo did not want to show up in that thing for my freaking driver's test fercryingoutloud, but I got through it despite being hypernervous about sending the wrong vibe to the test examiner dude. Fuck all, Dad, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Here, Mr. Examiner, do try to look impressed.

(In his defense, he did have the good sense to buy a new Porsche two weeks before my sixteenth birthday, and he let me drive it. The last year of high school was kind of fun, sometimes.)

I almost failed the written portion of the test the first time I took it when I was 15 1/2. I failed the maneuverability test going forward the first time I took it. I was pissed.

I was a special snowflake, too. I didn't get my license until a few days after my 20th birthday.

I can confirm Smokedaddy's account of lax requirements. My dad just had to take a written test, go through driving ed in school and have 8 hours of driving before taking the test. My dad became a driving instructor in the late '70s after he got out of the army and needed a part-time job while going to grad school. Apparently driving ed instructor was the best job he could get at the time.

Bloody hell, it's sooo different here in the uk.

It's estimated that the average amount of lessons required before taking the practical test is 36. You pay for them individually and the total cost comes to approx £1100 ($1690)

You need to pass a theory test which costs £31 ($48) and a practical test which costs £62 ($95). The practical test isn't easy either, most test centres have a pass rate of less than 50%, so you end up retaking it.

So that's maybe £1255 ($1928) just to acquire a licence over here, ouch!

I'm going for the third dark-horse possibility that Chris was in a well-enough place at the time to pass the test.

Sure, high school graduation bogged him down somewhat, but he was now an adult, going to school and soon to hold down a job at Wendy's. The world was his for the taking, and life was good.

That, and Borb, having gone through-one? two? three?-frivolous suits, likely didn't have the financial resources to be a legitimate threat anymore.

Seriously, it isn't that hard to get a driver's license in the US, and some states have especially crappy standards from what I hear. Besides, like my dad told my brother and me, just because you have a license doesn't mean you know how to drive. Even though Chris has a license it doesn't mean he knows how to drive.

And besides, how do you threaten the Department of Motor Vehicles? It's not some crummy school board they're going after, they would be challenging a state agency.

why is cwc allowed to drive? you'd think he'd at least have gotten a stern talking-to somewhere along the line about not hitting people with cars

I know. I'm surprised he didn't at least get his license suspended for hitting Snyder and then running from the cops.
