Seeing as Phil has kept alluding to this mystery 'emergency' for more than a month now, it's probably worth its own thread.
During Phil's 'career' he has had numerous 'emergencies' where he makes an effort to drum up monetary support for various reasons. A quick breakdown of 'da history' (written by OneDaySon) follows:
What happened:
Phil made an emergency vlahg in which he appeared to be genuinely distressed (people's opinion of whether this is genuine or not vary). Very briefly he is unwilling to talk at any length about what the exact issue is, which has created rampant speculation.
His unwillingness to talk about things may be a signal that this is a legal matter.
During Phil's 'career' he has had numerous 'emergencies' where he makes an effort to drum up monetary support for various reasons. A quick breakdown of 'da history' (written by OneDaySon) follows:
Early 2013 - Throughout 2012 DSP noticed a slow, but gradual decline in views. In late 2012 he started getting desperate over it, so in 2013 he instituted some "HYOOJ" changes in a vlog in order to bring people who left back. These changes were: Creating a new vlog channel called The King of Hate Vlogs, which he would move his week in previews and Hateful truths over, as well as bring back DSP Tries it for it. He'd also retire the DSP Street Fighter Channel, and would be moving from his camcorder to direct capture. He'd also be streaming 'any of the big games from time to time'. (Look how that turned out). His views still declined because his decline had nothing to do with that but his behaviour which he never changed.
Late 2013 - His Machinima contract was reworked, he says he's making significantly less money (Probably from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands) 'and doesn't know what to do' and 'doesn't know if he can do this anymore.' He says the good knews is that the contract is extended again and he resigned, he was worried due to the hate he might have been dropped.
Late 2015 - Machinima announce they're reworking contracts again. DSP goes into panic mode and makes emergency vlahgs beforehand. It turns out the reduction is only minor, he's relieved. He contract is also extended again, which he gives a "fuck you" to the haters for.
Early 2016 - Youtube move him from a view based contract to an ad based contract. DSP always used to say his whining about views was about more than money and about 'viewer retention' and 'whats popular' and 'what works' and 'analysis'. Despite all of these claims, discussion about views stop quickly. He also quickly changes his position on ad-blocker. He used to be pro-adblocker and used to just tell people to put it on if they don't like the ads and stop being whiny, to now being anti-adblocker and anyone who uses it is a 'piece of shit'

Quotes from Phil:
- "if I were ever forced to sell this place, and go to a small place or you know, god forbid, worst case scenario, move back to the east coast, back to where I started, a lot of the things, the improvements that I put into the business slash whatever you want to call this, because technically it's not a business. That's another thing to, I've been calling out this is not a business, because it's not, it's not a legally registered business and a lot of people have been saying 'oh that's why I think Phil is getting tax audited'. It's not, this isn't a legally registered business at all. It's just me being self-employed, making some ad revenue on my videos on YouTube, making some ad revenue on my stream, and you guys subbing, cheering, tipping, patreon, you know all that is income and it's not a registered business or anything like that."
- "This year has been one of if not the most challenging year of my life. A lot of shit that happened, the YouTube adpocalypse, going out of my five.. year-long relationship with my ex-girlfriend, struggling through, deader times in the summer, trying to put out constant content, with my throat being fucked up like it was all summer, and finally seemingly a false copyright strike as well during the summer, let's not forget about those. And finally, seeming to come over the end and now things have been good, you know, August was a great month on stream and on YouTube, September, you know there's 6 days left in the month after today and its looking like its going to be a good month overall if not great, like August was."
- Note: there was some distinction/word play when he mentioned his relationship with Leanna. He almost tried to enforce that it was year-long, but that's my own personal take on how he screwed up the wording.
- "very important appointment I have to go to in the afternoon, that was the only time available on an emergency basis to have this kind of appointment and basically the appointments around like early afternoon, so I don't know when its going to end. It could end up being quick, it could end up taking forever, I don't know"
- "I will say this, I will say this, if and when I finally have some definitive news on all this shit going on behind the scenes, that I feel like I can share with you and it's healthy to do so, not that I'm going to share information when it's something already in process and now it can affect the process. You know what's going to happen, already people are making these wild theories, these crazy ass fucking theories are insane, like shell corporations, couldn't believe that one. It was like this elaborately drawn out conspiracy theory I saw on my forums, I was like 'Jesus Christ, these people have so much free time to think this shit up, I couldn't have thought that shit up, seriously."
- "But anyway, the point I'm making is I will, I'm dying to tell you what's going on, but right now it would not benefit me to do so, until I have more information for you, until I'm in a situation where I know exactly how what's going on is going to affect me in the long term, okay, so why tell you about something now when I have no idea what's going to happen?"
- "I mean, best case scenario, again (Phil does a touchwood motion on his table, which I'm pretty sure is covered with vinyl and thus would negate any benefit from doing a touchwood) maybe the whole thing is just blown out of proportion and will not affect me too big at all, and I could just keep doing this and I never have to mention it again. Worst case having to lose everything and basically sell off everything in the house, sell the house, move back to Connecticut, that would not be good... that would be horrible, that would be really like... giving up basically, throwing in the towel after busting my ass for so long and I don't want to have to do that, but it's like I said in the video last week, some things can't be helped and sorry that I'm not... I never made it big on YouTube like everyone else did, it's funny because everyone knows who I am, everyone knows DarksydePhil but I'm not rich... but yet everyone knows who I am versus everyone else who're big names on YouTube all have insane amounts of money and shit... and you know, I never got there. Crazy, because if I was in that situation I'd probably be ok, but that's it, I'm not, I'm already extended to the point where you guys know I'm barely paying my bills and something else creeps up. This is just insanity at this point, so I'll let you know when I have more information."
Things we know:
- Phil's language in his emergency video indicated that he received "notice of" something
- Phil has denied it is an audit
- Phil has denied DSP Enterprises
- Phil's language in this emergency video has been to call what he does "not a business" after years of confidently claiming that what he does is a business.
- At this stage my personal opinion is that this is him starting to slowly admit defeat over things and coming to the realization that what he does isn't a business. He can't sell it.
- Phil has said that all theories (which excluded PandaLee at the time) were not remotely close
- Phil claims that he has done nothing wrong and that the issue is pretty much "bullshit"
- Phil has claimed to be experiencing a large amount of stress due to this issue and specifically mentioned the possibility of losing his house
- Phil has claimed to experience a large volume of unexpected phone calls/meetings due to this issue and has had to postpone and cancel some streams
- Phil has made a unique distinction with this 'emergency vlahg' stating that this problem is unable to be fixed by his supporters. On top of claiming to potentially lose his house, this indicates the problem is likely to be a major financial issue.
- Phil has asked for moral/positive support and although he appreciates tips/cheers/subs/patreon support he is mainly asking for moral support.
Current theories (sponsored by :autism:
- Phil issues
- IRS Audit
- Unlikely given he has denied it as well as having his taxes signed off by a proper accountant
- Extremely unlikely that Phil has made repeated statements in the past about avoiding things such as PayPal donation links due to his tax accountant's advice. The least credit I can award to Phil in this scenario is that he seems to be keenly aware of what he can and cannot write off with his taxes.
- The reddit post that was flying around about a Washington-based YouTuber getting audited is 99.999% not Phil due to the amounts involved. This was most likely Onision's post (who is another internet panhandler who happens to be facing a major IRS audit)
- DSP Enterprises shenanigans
- Phil has explicitly denied the existence of DSP Enterprises
- During the recent hack it was revealed his Comcast account was signed up under the business name "DSP Enterprises"
- Phil initially denied anything to do with DSP Enterprises, then later claimed that Comcast forced him to come up with a business name on the spot (he says he couldn't leave it empty).
- There is speculation that Phil fraudulently created DSP Enterprises to get business class internet. In a previous post on this thread, I pointed out the numerous results from Google showing several Comcast Business customers in residential areas.
- Phil claims to operate as a sole proprietor and pays his taxes quarterly which adds up based upon research.
- So far, based upon what is known, this seems like a non-issue.
- Bank recalling loan due to risk factors or some sort of event happening with his debt
- Certainly possible. Especially since Phil has 2 outstanding house loans and a loan for his car as well as other outstanding credit.
- It is possible Phil's loan(s) were put through fraudulently by his bank, then another bank purchased them and has asked for documentation to prove his ability to pay his loan. If he cannot provide this, based upon what I've read, the bank can require he repay the loan immediately.
- He could also be facing this due to nonpayment of homeowner's insurance, nonpayment of HOA dues or because he has failed to maintain the property or somehow reneged on terms he agreed with the bank.
- BSV shared his opinion on TKOH forums saying its probably an interest rate adjustment which has pushed Phil's debt from manageable to unmanageable.
- Phil getting evicted due to HOA issues of some form
- Unknown. Phil lives in a gated community and is pretty much required to keep the HOA happy. The only thing we know is he recently had to powerwash his driveway because the HOA requires it.
- One presented theory is that Phil has violated rules within his community by running a business within his house. It could be that due to noise complaints or similar the HOA decided to actively investigate the issue.
- Someone in this thread posted the actual HOA rules and they are extremely detailed when it comes to property maintenance. It is a possibility that Phil didn't maintain his property adequately and has been given a massive bill.
- (This previously mentioned Pandalee's business being registered at the house address. It turns out she just had a DBA (doing business as) license which isn't the same as a business license. This makes it an extremely unlikely factor, but keeping it here because of da :autism
- Due to a recent increase in his property value it was theorized that perhaps his fees have increased dramatically making it untenable for him to continue living there.
- It is unlikely that Phil is having issues paying the current HOA fees given he has lived in the house for 3 years.
- Phil having issues because of recent Equifax data leaks
- Unlikely
- YouTube/Twitch/Patreon/PayPal issues
- Unlikely. Despite the downturn in YouTube revenue, Phil has a preferential relationship with Twitch and they don't really care to go after him.
- It is possible that the large sum of money Phil was heavily dependent upon receiving in October has somehow been delayed or withheld due to unknown reasons.
- Pandalee issues
- (Note: so far Phil has not engaged with any of the Pandalee issues at all. These have also been put forward on his own official forum by users. He has not responded in any way to anything to do with his "ex girlfriend" despite saying that various other theories are completely false.)
- Pandalee is suing Phil because he shared private medical information on his YouTube channel just before their relationship ended
- However unlikely this may be, based upon previous court cases it is an actual possibility.
- Pandalee's hospital/ambulance costs or something related to it
- A possibility, however distant.
- Pandalee claiming palimony
- This is possible in Washington.
- Pandalee trying to claim her share of the house/exit the house mortgage
- This is a real possibility, but we do not know if she was listed on the mortgage.
- UPDATE: according to some research by someone on this thread she is not listed on the deed for the house. Not sure if that means she couldn't still be a part of the mortgage though.
- Pandalee is pregnant
- Although someone claimed that Pandalee said she never wanted kids, things change when people actually get pregnant so this is not beyond the realm of possibility
- Health related issues
- Phil having some sort of health issues
- Unknown. Even though Phil isn't healthy, there is nothing to really suggest something medically related at this stage with any certainty.
- Phil's parents having some sort of health issues
- Unknown.
- "The Perfect Storm" issues
- One theory is that due to Phil's constantly precarious financial situation a combination of factors have come together which has placed him in an unfortunate position where he is unable to make payment on his dues or is unable to make payment on a major unexpected cost due to how thin his budget is.
- Wildcard issues (since people have legit asked if these are serious or backed by anything, they generally aren't)
- EVO has tried to revoke Phil's 2005 4th place rank in Street Fighter Turbo 2 (as documented on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_Championship_Series)
- Gout
- Sexual harassment lawsuit
- Lawsuit of some kind
- Aliens
- idk someone legit mentioned aliens in the thread a few pages back
- Libel/slander/defamation lawsuit launched by one of the many thousands of people Phil has attacked on his streams/videos
- Heavy metal poisoning from consumption of poorly produced batch of V8 energy drinks
- Being sued by BMW after they discovered he never changed the oil in 3 years of leasing a car.
- Physical injury caused by game controller
- Physical injury caused by CD-ROM being used in an old, unmaintained console causing a CD explosion and leading to major shrapnel damage.
- Physical injury caused by precarious placements of expensive and useless gaming statues.
- Physical injury caused by Keurig coffee maker malfunctioning
- Lasting physical injury caused by Salmonella infection after trying to replicate a Jack Scalfani recipe in order to try and make a prototype menu for his home-cooked Authentic Italian restaurant concept.
- Loan shark threatening Phil over unpaid debts accrued by overspending on mobile games
- Major/expensive structural issues to Phil's house caused by his weight
- Major/expensive mold issues caused by Phil keeping his house messy
- Extended/immediate family being affected by natural disaster (such as a hurricane) and having to put Phil in a situation where he has to downscale his life in order to help them
- Nothing
- Ruse Cruise
- Phil has done this as an elaborate ruse cruise and then will sit around at a later date to point out how mentally deranged his 'detractors' are for speculating
