Slaves to Armok: God of Blood
Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress

They say the best things all come in three's. We begin our third venture into the unwinnable micromanaging simulator. This Series will be played on the 0.44.05 version of the game, the latest version as of writing so all attempts by all players must be played using this version.
For those reading who have no idea what is going on; the goal of a succession game is to keep the fortress alive for one year, then the fortress will be passed onto the next player and so forth. Anyone inheriting the fortress is free to do with it as they please, so as long as they don't intentionally ruin the game. Experience in playing the game is preferred but not necessary, although be warned as this game is notoriously hard and a community fort is never a good place for a tutorial.
Any one who wants a turn, simply post saying that you do and you'll be added to the list. Due to problems with the last fort, all turns will have a maximum play time of 2 weeks. Simply put the year must be started, ended and uploaded within those 2 weeks. Anyone who can't keep up to that time limit will be skipped over, regardless of how far in they are. Finally, anyone who wants to play but is scared they'll fuck everything up, don't be, the games tagline is "Losing is fun" for a reason.
With that said, Strike the Earth!

I like glacier but close enough to temperate climates that we get caravans.

I'd also like above average-high savagery, but don't particularly care about good/neutral/evil.

I have an idea for a challenge.
MEGA PROJECT MAYHEM!
Everytime you start your turn, you should attempt a large scale project, such as building a pump stack, a watch tower, a lava-spewing cannon, a room full of traps for gobbos to wander into, a zoo, or something else. The more complex and stupid, the better.
Of course, it's unlikely that your project will be finished within a year, meaning that the fortress will swiftly become a maze of half-finished projects, most likely build on top of each other.

Challenge: keep the first siege that hits the fortress going for the entire rest of the playthrough.

Also, I'm up for it, but can you put me at, like, #4 instead of #2?

The fortress will begin on Sunday 21st January, if anyone wants to nominate any challenges before then, now's your chance.
@AnOminous @Randall Fragg @An Ghost @Hat @Burned Man @Sammy

2 or 3 is fine with me. I want to get a turn in before the potato I'm running it on suffers FPS death.

I also changed my vote to Jungle to break a tie if you haven't already started.

Well fam, Jungle was voted for our settlement with 40% of the votes, guess we're starting there.
The place I've picked has untamed wilds, shallow and deep metals, flux stone, Gobbo's and most importantly, no aquifier. It's also on a 2 x 2 area.

Time to Strike the Earth!

15th of Granite: The mighty dwarvern fortress of "Palacecastles" has been founded, well i say founded, it looks like this now, but we'll build an impenetrable mountainhome right here:
untitled.png

2nd of Slate: After having delved underground, we have discovered the rock layer, unfortunately, there is no iron to be found, but we do have chalk and tetrahedrite, for what good it's worth.
23rd of Slate: Through some luck, we found some bituminous Coal, it'll save us on charcoal usage at least although, with the amount of wood we have, i don't think it'll be very necessary.
1st of Slate: using our new crafting rooms, I've sent orders to smelt some of this tetrahedrite, hopefully we'll get some silver out of it for crafts for when our trades in autumn.
24th of Felsite: Our Storage area is almost complete, now to start working on our tavern and hospital before we
trade away all our crutches by accident, its a more common problem then most people would think...
4th of Malachite: Some migrants arrived! we got:
1 x Weaver
1 x Furnace Operator
1 x Metalsmith
1 x Criminal(?!)
5 x Criminals kids (i shit you not)
we now have 17 dwarves, 5 of them are worthless and 1 is of.... untrustworthy occupation. I already don't like where this is going.
12th of Malachite: Mass-masonry is now underway to provide furniture for our new plebs. After checking, it seems our new criminal is competent at wielding an axe... which is scarily accurate, it really sheds light on why he's a criminal to begin with.
16th of Galena: We've stockpiled quite a bit of silver from smelting, not enough to anything meaningful with but some trading goods wouldn't be harmful, i hope.
2nd of Limestone: Our food supply is running low, i blame the children, hopefully they'll either grow up or the trading caravan will arrive soon.
16th of Limestone: I've established our Criminal as our Broker, its ok though:
untitled.png

He's a great intimidator
18th of Limestone: Just in time, the traders have arrived
21st of Limestone: I've bought some Food, Booze, Thread, one precious iron bar and other miscellaneous shit. I've ordered some iron, steel, pig iron and alpaca's for future stuff. overall, a pretty shit order but it'll hopefully last us until winter.
5th of sandstone: We found a panda in a tree:
untitled.png

I want that panda, in other news, nothing is happening and i'm bored.
12th of Sandstone: More migrants, we got:
1 x Cheese maker
1 x Mason
1 x Animal Dissector
4 x more fucking kids
we have 24 dwarves, 9 of them are worthless and our fortress is being run by who i assume is a mass murderer. This sounds like the perfect set up for a kiwi fort.
19th of Sandstone: The merchants have left, probably to go laugh at how fucked we are.
9th of Timber:
untitled.png

I may have fucked with the wrong panda last month.
Thankfully, it arrived and decided to murder the horses we had outside our fortress before it went to massacre only one dwarf before turning back. we then sent our tiny militia to murder the cunt for killing a dwarf. Get fucked Warepanda, we win.
16th of Timber:
untitled.png

This was made in the middle of all that chaos, its kinda cool i think.
24th of Moonstone: We have what i like to call a "Charcoal famine", as in we have a ton of metal but no charcoal to made shit with it. In other news, no more panda's have attacked us.
25th of Opal: Amidst the nothing that is happening, our farms have been pumping out mushrooms, we have farms at last.
28th of Obsidian: And with that, a very quiet winter has come to an end.

Besides the mountains of babies we have and our special visitor, it was a pretty quiet year. Here are the stats for the fortress:
untitled.png

and here's the Save:
http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13449

And with that, it's up to the next player, @AnOminous , good luck, and if anyone wants to propose a special challenge, hopefully we can vote on one soon. Thanks for reading fam, lets make this a fortress to remember, for all the wrong reasons.

I guess I will start this day after tomorrow. I have to research the changes. I am trying to think of a completely idiotic megaproject that can't possibly work.

But my last megaproject of capturing a Forgotten Beast actually worked.

One of my ideas is a giant waterfall across multiple levels with all the noble vermin living quarters facing into it. And a tavern with waterfalls across every part of it, suspended on a spire with nothing around it, so well, you can get what might happen.

Kinda want to participate, but not sure if I should since I'm the sole reason the last thread went to shit. Still feel bad about that.
What do others think? With the new 2 week rule should I volunteer, or should I GTFO 'cause my ass ain't welcome in these parts?

The OP actually tagged you in. You were just the last in a series of people including me who screwed up for weeks on end. Only rule is 14 days hard limit. On Monday I called starting on Wednesday because I had to install everything again anew, but I'll try to be done by Monday after next.

You're more then welcome to have a go if you want, so as long as you keep to the time limit.
Let's keep what happened to the last fortress in the old thread, we all have our own demons to Bury there, lol.
If you want to play just say so and we can add you, there's plenty of people who will if you won't and this game has only just begun.

Alright, I'll sign up then.
I already have a megaproject in mind if thats the challenge we're going for. SPOILERS: its a trading depot / sacrificial pit where we can slaughter merchants whose wares or prices displease us, and also every elven caravan ever because fuck elves). I'll draw up the idea into a jpeg later but the short version is a trade depot held up by a single pillar (connected to a lever) over a fuckhuge pit with traps and a grating on the floor (so that all the blood can drain away). Leading down and up from the grated floor is a spiraling ramp around the perimeter of the pit, also lined with traps, so anything that survives gets butchered on the way up. The floor is a grate so that dwarves can go down and fetch anything not broken or destroyed in the fall, so the merchants (unbefitting) goods can still goto use. Optional water pump system to fill the bottom with water if desired to drown victims if want. Also useful for political prisoners and to appease our merciless Dwarven Gods by offering sacrifices for the summer harvest.

First things first: https://mega.nz/#!PIRS0Y5K!2ZOlqeY26kimxjp0F65zbaANQ85SYJGQYC8CI9S62Uc

The fort is now 62 strong, from migrant arrivals, as well as frequent visitors petitioning to join.

I was actually planning something like that collapsing trade depot, or at least some other megaproject, but instead, I had perhaps the single most boring year in a fortress I've ever seen. I very adventurously set up workflows in the job manager for nearly a year. I also found the first cavern layer, and secured it with a bridge which is currently open.

I built a hospital.

Since we only have stagnant water on the map, I set up a water purification screw pump and filled up an aqueduct with fresh water under a well in the hospital, which I also designated a non-denominational temple.

I got soap manufacturing started, although you might want to intervene to make it more productive. I also made some steel weapons.

The summary is we have lots of tetrahedrite, an abundance of coal of all kinds, an obscene amount of flux stones, lots of trees, and a pretty healthy amount of edible vegetation and fruit for eating and for brewing.

There are regular waves of migrants, and we have frequent visitors. The military visitors quite often petition to stay and I assign them to our second squad, the first being reserved for dwarves. You might want to clean that up.

Finally, we have 50 spiked wooden balls. These are obscenely valuable and should be used for trading to anyone but the elves. For those, use prepared meals (or just kill them with a collapsing Trade Depot).

ygoCv19.png

We had three thoroughly unimpressive artifacts, this one a chalk armor stand. It's in the mayor's tomb and makes it a Royal Mausoleum.

sbvunge.png

This is a coal amulet made by a possessed child. The third, I was so unimpressed with I forgot to even screenshot it.

4W1pVPd.png

The only thing I'd bother with in this dwarven mandate is cut gems. The others are either things we want to keep or don't pay much of a premium anyway.

qQKCEOo.png

The only event worth noting in the entire year was the appearance of this giant cave spider, name of Sutarpujor. He killed a civilian and one of our human volunteers on his first mission, literally a minute after he petitioned to stay.

Bad timing, I suppose.

cHWPCZ3.png

This is the only three levers in the fort, in the dining room so that berserk dwarves can easily get to them and flip them for the lulz.

The top lever is for the chalk bridge out front (I never tested this myself). The second down is for the petrified wood bridge that can close off the first cavern layer.

pOee82m.png

This is that cavern layer.

The one on the bottom is for a bridge being used as a floodgate in the canal feeding the well.

1DPk6cS.png

And this is the hospital that contains that well.

WKqGkAO.png

And this is the canal itself. You will need to open that bridge if you want to refill the well.

You might notice the water coming from the surface only has a diagonal way through. That's because of water pressure rules in the game, so that even if that bridge gets destroyed or stuck in the down position, it still won't be able to overflow the well and flood the fortress. Supposedly. I put the bridge there anyway.

xF7rZrI.png

And this is the screw pump that must be manually operated to fill the well. It turns stagnant water into fresh water.

The very last thing I did was set up some bee hives up front. There's a workflow that should start generating mead eventually.

Sorry it's not more interesting, but for a change, almost nothing happened, even in the winter months when I usually cause some disaster.

I'd recommend buffing the military with armor and weapons if you can and maybe make it a bit more coherent and give the squads separate barracks instead of the shithole they're currently both sharing.
