Speaking of, I remember when they were called "Electronic Arts" and had those 3D solids as a logo.

I believe a certain well-known video game giant with a plumber for a mascot is also dropping some online support for older consoles and games this month as well.

What I really can't belive is that they're dropping multiplayer from new-er games like Crysis 2. That game was released in 2011, why would you shut down the master server for a three year-old game?

Gotta make money fast.

Seriously though, it's probably too costly for them to manage older games or something? I have no idea.

Sorry, the title is misleading. These are all games that are affected by Gamespy's shutdown, and EA is actually trying to find a way to keep some of these games' multiplayer running.

I remember when they still used other franchises like Road Rash and Strike.

Yeah at the end of the day, not enough people are playing these games to justify the costs involved with keeping them running. At the very least they should release the online code to allow people to run their own servers though.

It's one of the drawbacks to the increasing reliance on online multiplayer in many games, it's worth remembering that if you're buying a game for it's online component you're essentially buying something with a limited lifespan.

Remember when EA Genesis cartridges were taller than most and had that weird yellow plastic thing on the top?
Yeah, it's essentially because EA reverse engineered the Genesis carts to avoid paying the licensing fees to Sega for releasing games on their system. The going rate was $8-10 per cart through Sega and EA only ended up paying $2 per cart to Sega. Sega, understandably tried to sue, but the judge ruled against them for some reason. Apparently EA even threatened to sell their tech to other companies and demanded a flat out cap $2 million in fees per game released, and didn't even pay Sega for dev kits as they just reverse engineered their own.
When you consider just how popular the EA sports games were on the Genesis, Sega lost out on a shit ton of money.

Yup, even back in the day, EA were cunts.

Damn. I didn't even realize Neverwinter Nights still had online support. I figure anybody still playing it (Online. I'm sure I can single player it as much as I damned well want, right?) is savvy enough to run their own server or some shit.

All the same, this is why I tend to avoid online play, and rarely if ever touch MMOs. I don't like the idea that my access to the game is mercy to the whims of a corporation.
