Sources have told Deadline that one of the directors the producers are looking at is Jean-Marc Vallee to take on the latest Bond adventure. The director is most known for his Oscar-nominated movies DALLAS BUYERS CLUB and WILD, while his HBO shows BIG LITTLE LIES and SHARP OBJECTS have received mountains of praise. Deadline notes that even though he’s someone on the list, Vallee may not be available to direct due to scheduling.

Another name on the list is reportedly Edgar Wright, who has expressed an interest in directing a Bond movie in the past. He’s currently riding a wave after last year’s BABY DRIVER was one of the best-reviewed movies of the year, cracking $100 million at the box office. He still has yet to solidify his next project, although a sequel to BABY has been mentioned here and there.

Other talented directors have been on the lists in the past, such as Denis Villeneuve (BLADE RUNNER 2049), Yann Demange (’71, WHITE BOY RICK) and David Mackenzie (HELL OR HIGH WATER, OUTLAW KING). But according to a report from Variety we covered yesterday, Eon and MGM seem keen on hiring a new screenwriter as well, as producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli didn’t want Hodge’s latest draft, nor are they interested in the draft from long-time Bond writers Robert Wade and Neal Purvis. This means they need a new director and screenwriter to come on board and be ready to go by December or January, lest they risk having to push the release back.

If Vallee and Wright are indeed in the mix it means the producers are clearly open to exploring various styles for BOND 25. We would get two very different movies from either of them, with Vallee favoring heavily dramatic projects that are filmed in a more improvised way as to favor the actor as they explore the character in the moment. Then we have Wright, who is very precise and has a clear vision for what he wants to do, making him better suited for action movies, but could mean a lengthy pre-production, which he may not have time for.

BOND 25 is still slated for November 9, 2019.

Then again, these are the same people who think that Idris Elba is the only suitable candidate to be the next Bond, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

Even though he is a great actor, it would be a bad idea to have Idris Elba as this isn't like Dr. Who where he can be anyone due to his regeneration, this is supposed to be one Scottish man.

I used to think James Bond was just a code name, and not a real person and that lots of agents were James Bond over the years, which explains why he looks different in each installment. I was not a fan of giving him an origin in Skyfall. Or making him related to Blofeld, that's sounds very Austin Powers.

I still think James Norton is the sensible choice for Bond 7. He was really good in Happy Valley, and I've heard the same about his role in Grantchester.

I know it's cliche, but with the choices from the public surrounding this franchise (Nolan director, Idris Elba or Tom Hardy for Bond) I do have to say 'NORMIES GET OUT!'

Unpopular opinion time, I think Ebla would be good for Bond and I want to preface I hate WE WUZing everything.

As a fan of the novels, James Bond is always fought over is he a code name, or a single man. Skyfall really leans (while not out right saying) a man as he's from the Bond family and an orphan.

Having a black man (who I really like as an actor) who's also legit English vs some of his other actors namely the great Sean Connery himself. Really shuts the door of single agent.

So we restart the debate, but because many of the Bond stories are written in the past him being black could also be some OPSEC so you can't find agent Bond.

Lastly, I post here, I love some butt mad, so having a good actor who probably would be a really good Bond causing that much salt is just an extra plus.

The fact Danny Boyle left has me concerned though. What was he planning that the producers didn't like?

Or what are the producers planning?...

It seems like he was going for the standard "RUSSIA ARE HACKERS WHO HATE THE USA" narrative, or so what we've heard from multiple sources.

I have to give credit to Barbara Broccoli and Wilson, they didn't completely capitulate to the standard narrative.

An Edgar Wright-directed James Bond would be incredible, but I seriously doubt that the producers would go for him if they were having trouble working with Danny Boyle. Of all the potential candidates, I like David McKenzie the best.

Yeah I feel like the hate for Idris Bond is motivated entirely by the current political climate. When I first heard his name thrown around in 2014 all I could think was "that's absolutely perfect".

I thought it was the fact that he said he wanted it to more respectful towards the #MeToo and #TimesUP movement that was said earlier this year that made people alarmed.

That would have killed it for me and most of the fanbase.

It's mainly an age issue more than anything for me. He would have been great if Craig stopped at Skyfall, or even after Spectre. The political motivation doesn't help.

That's also a possibility, but from what's been released, the creative direction he wanted to take it was too political for the producers and Craig to appreciate.

Russia was never an enemy in James Bond movies, they always cooperate to defeat a greater enemy. And it was during the cold war! Danny Boyle is exceptional if he really wanted to make such a stupid political commentary in a series that's the epitome of escapism.

I don't know, they kind of were in For Your Eyes Only.
