Came across this article this morning. The TL;DR is that the conception rate when pulling out is only about 1% higher than using condoms. I'm curious if people agree or disagree with that assessment. I've always been a puller and the only time I've knocked a girl up was intentional.

It's never been a doubt that pulling out is effective when done correctly, the problem is nobody does it correctly. And I don't blame them! Trying to think clearly when so close to orgasm isn't easy. Remember that this includes retards. "Perfect" use is 4% pregnancy versus 2% pregnancy. That is, twice the chance of an unwanted pregnancy. That's actually a 100% difference.

However, people live longer than a year.

The chance of unwanted pregnancy over a 10 year period with a 2% chance per year would be about 18.3%.

The chance of unwanted pregnancy over a 10 year period with a 4% chance per year would be about 33.5%.

So they both ultimately add up to something pretty substantial.

The best, long-term, is using something like a contraceptive implant that can't be used "imperfectly" and has a really low failure rate of .05%.

Things like condoms are reasonable for casual encounters, I suppose.

A major thing they don't detail is what is the rate of perfect use as compared to imperfect use for each method? Pulling out seems a lot more un-fun.

With the amount of variables here, the most accurate way to measure typical effectiveness might be a retrospective study. Find people who had regular sex for 5 years/10 years, ask what method(s) of contraception they used, then look at the number of children conceived in that period. Stratify the respondents into groups based on methods of contraception or other factors (ie trying to conceive, age, health issues known to affect fertility), calculate the relative numbers of conceptions in each group, compare between groups etc.

Expecting that you're always going to pull out 100% correctly and you don't need a condom because of that is like saying you don't need a handrail while you're walking along a 50 foot bridge.

Sure you can probably nail it well but you're risking your life, in one instance figuratively and the other literally. And I'd rather just use a condom than risk my entire life changing in an instant against my will.

I'd rather use a condom than pull out. Condoms prevent STDs as well as pregnancy, so that's a plus. Plus, they're not hard to use at all you just have to have proper lubrication and put it on right. People also forget that pre-ejaculate can pick up sperm so that can also affect pulling out.

Pulling out, in theory, makes sense. But the thing is, it will never be done perfectly 100% of the time because of human error and some things, like pre-ejaculate or inexperience, will hinder that percentage.

If you really don't like the feeling of a condom and your partner is STD-free, find other methods of birth control. The pill has a very high rate at 99.9% when taken correctly (every day at the same time, it's really not that hard if you set an alarm)
women get implants, you can get your tubes tied/a vasectomy, patches, etc. There's a lot to use instead of condoms. Pulling out really isn't the wisest thing you can do, and sure it can be effective, but it's not the most effective and there's just so many better options.

They are actually working on a new method, pretty much it's a pill that freezes the proteins that cause the sperm tails to move, so even if ejaculation occurs the sperm will not be able to swim up to the egg, of course it's still in written stage and far from actual production, plus there is the risk of side effects like infertility and other stuff. Still pulling out isn't the greatest method, as the mere act of lubrication can actually carry sperm from a previous ejaculation.

The risk of something so finicky as pulling out makes sex unsexy. Paranoia that you're gonna get knocked up or riddled with STIs is a massive mood killer. I'm a massive recommender of birth control implants and IUDs. The pill is annoying because it effectiveness isn't enough to grant peace of mind (in my opinion), not to mention it fluctuates if you are off on timing.

Implants like Nexplanon last three years and take zero maintainance. Slighlty uncomfortable to get done but like 99% effective or more? Hell yes. Hormonal and copper IUDs are obviously a lot more invasive and pretty damn uncomfortable to get done, but when they last up to 5 and 10 years (respectively) they're nothing to sniff at. Plus they are all totally reversible. Seriously though, if one has the ability to access these forms of contraception I have no idea why they wouldn't.

TL;DR relying on pulling out is dumb. If you want to go bare with people get STI testing done and have a proper contraceptive on board. Otherwise stick with condoms.

The virtue of condoms is that it's the only practical method of temporary contraception that a man can provide himself. This has both practical value (don't have to worry about sabotaged contraception) and moral value (seems unfair to ask a woman to get an implant or take a drug she would not otherwise take purely to provide convenience for a man).

Anytime someone says "X method that's easy to screw up is as effective as Y method that isn't as easy to fuck up, when done correctly" just makes me shake my head. It's the wrong comparison being made. Airplanes are far safer than cars, but that doesn't mean I'd call them safe if you put the average motorist behind the controls of a 747.

But even then, people can make occasional mistakes, or they can trust people too much, or they can be caught up in the moment. It's complicated.

But even then, people can make occasional mistakes, or they can trust people too much, or they can be caught up in the moment. It's complicated.

There's people who hang out by the bus depot where I live who hand out free rubbers to everyone from time to time. While not everyone gets the opportunity to use them for their original purpose, it's nice to have an endless supply for making balloon animals with.

Really there's no fucking excuse for not using one when the situation warrants it. When there's people practically giving them away, anyone who has an opportunity to have sex should know how to use one.
