Not very surprising results, the opposition party usually makes gains in the elections that occur during the first two years of a new presidency.

I know that Ed Gillespie's ads were not well received in Virginia, there were something among the lines of "LOOK OUT FOR PEDOPHILES! LOOK OUT FOR LATINOS! I'M NOT TRUMP!"

I wonder if this means Virginia is permanently blue now. Democrats have been consistently winning statewide elections there for nearly a decade.

Meh, it'll never be as blue as New Jersey, which still had someone like Chris Christie for two terms. His 2009 victory was basically a miracle from a coin with both sides Democrat landing on its side, and fact everybody had enough with Corzine. Northam of course had the benefit of being lieutenant governor under the departing McAuliffe administration.

Technically the only reason VA is blue is because northen virginia is super fucking liberal and also where the majority of the population lives. VA is probably gonna blue for a while unless the demographics shift any time soon.

Sounds like most blue states in general.

Democrats did well in the Virginia House of Delegates as well. Picked up at least 48 seats, and could actually win the state legislature. Which is amazing because the GOP had a supermajority there.

People don't give a shit. If you make that the core of your campaign you're going to lose. One candidate simply seemed more practical than another.

Also, there's definitely an anti-Trump thing where people literally voted against the Republican to vote against Trump.

Gillespie's inept campaign was predicated on the idea that the dumb hicks would vote for him because of them dern queers. Well, they weren't that dumb, or at least not enough of them. He should have focused on jobs and the economy. That culture warrior dog whistle shit is obsolete and went out in the early '00s.

As "Recently" as '04 NOVA wasn't that Blue compared to the rest of the State. The vote was around 51% Kerry 48/49% Bush. Then a couple things happened. 1st Tim "Stepdad" Kaine won the '05 Governor election. 2nd Senator George Allen self destructed hard in the '06 Senate election. 3rd Obama happened. He took the State for the Dems for the first time since '64. The GOP also lost the other Senate seat on the same day. Other then the '05 LG and AG elections and all the '09 elections the GOP hasn't won any Virginia Statewide elections since '04. It all comes back to NOVA swinging hard Left because of truly massive out of State migration and Suburbanites trending away from the GOP post Bush '43. It's almost a certainty Kaine will hold his Senate seat next year and in 2020... Well Trump will probably make another go at the State and He will have at least somewhat of a chance at picking Virginia up. Buts thats pretty far off right now. This is all just the reality in a State that went from Crimson Red to Purplish-Blue in a decade. Makes me glad I live in more Red trending State, Wisconsin,. Still all you Virginia Kiwis who have to put up with NOVAs bullshit have my sympathy.

To be fair to Gillespie... He really only campaigned the way he did because after his close Primary call against Corey Stewart and Strange going down in Alabama the specter of Bannon loomed large. At the time playing to hardcore Trump voters seemed to be a must. In hindsight Ed should have stuck to his guns and portrayed himself as a normal moderate Republican. Mostly cause said hardcore Trumpist's would in all likely hood have come to vote anyway. Instead he tried to be Trump without the rough edges and ended up alienating the moderate voters who shifted from Ed to Northam towards the end. But yeah I do agree that A. Ed screwed up and B. Virginia is still a very competitive State.
