Emmanuel Goldstein in 1984. Are there modern equivalents to Emmanuel Goldstein? -

Recently I’ve started rereading 1984. I haven’t read it for a long time and so there were a few things that stood out this time around, mostly Emmanuel Goldstein. There’ll obviously be spoilers.

Spoiler: Emmanuel Goldstein & Modern Day Equivalents?

Tldr is that he’s supposedly the arch enemy of the state and a traitor who wrote a book but he’s likely completely fictional. His book does circulate but its basically a honey pot to find wrong thinkers, trick them, and then they’re arrested, tortured, and brainwashed.

I don’t follow the Q stuff because it came across as extremely poorly written fan fiction targeting boomers and Q boomers are extremely embarrassing to be around. However, while I was reading 1984 it struck me what if Q Anon was basically a honey pot or it became a honey pot for boomers much like Goldstein’s book The Theory and Practice of Oligarchal Collectivism?

I also started considering other examples. Imo GamerGate is like a more autistic version of the supposed brotherhood, especially if I believed everything the press printed. I also suspect a lot of cringe activist groups are honey pots too, one of the first coming to mind is the Socialist Rifle Association and the myriad of other political groups (far left, far right, etc) on Facebook, Reddit, and other social media that like to fedpost.

I was thinking more in that it’s a honey pot than being the center of the 5 minutes of hate. Q is also associated with Trump and Jones. Almost every time Q Anon is mentioned, the media also brings up Trump.

The idea of just one guy being a honeypot is obsolete. If the glow-in-the-darks want you, you'll get your own custom honeypot.
Rather than inventing their own organizations, they'll usually just plant some agents in organizations like the Klan, radical mosques, and so on, and watch for anyone on their way out to the violent fringe. Those guys get their own little Truman Show.

Well, he was based on Trotsky in the novel. And to be honest, there have been teams of lots of people smarter than us trying to code out behavioural clues for criminality online. But as far as honey pots? It's hard to tell. Especially if they are done right imo

An entirely faked person is end game stuff after you've crushed all opposition, and even then it's more of a fictional horror inducing plot point.
In reality there's always someone fed up or insane enough to stand in front of a tank thinking they won't just be run over and written out of history.

Always assumed Goldstein was a reference to Hitler. Since Hitler is the devil and stupid who couldn't do anything by himself but at the sametime ran super evil empire. Plus theres all the 24/7 hate against him in every ww2 media. Hell even Churchill and Stalin don't get that much of bad rap and they were objectively eviler.
