I'm going to go ahead and guess that his soon to be ex-wife made it a condition of an amicable divorce that he files for bankruptcy before they divorce in order to discharge his likely substantial credit card debt. It's absurdly common for these men to immediately, upon declaring themselves trans, go crazy getting credit cards and maxing them out on "transition-related necessities" like cosmetic surgery, hormones, clothing, and makeup that they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. If he didn't discharge the debt through bankruptcy prior to the divorce, she may (depending on local laws) be legally responsible for at least half of it. So I'm betting she twisted his arm somehow to get him to do it.
