Empathy: Chris's new favorite big boy word -

Anyone notice that for awhile Chris has been making a big deal about how much empathy he has.

"On one hand, I empathize with you on the
loss of that relationship and worry, and on the other hand it is good
news for me to hear that you're breaking it off with him on the romance."

"I even remember your past excuse of Lars leaking our stuff to them as
well. That and "your friend" will NOT fly with me. I feel
disappointment and lack of trust with you. I am sorry, and I empathize
with how sad you probably feel from reading this, because I do not like
to hurt my friends, but this is the truth."

"They have- I mean, Jesus has done a lot with his miracles before he had to weigh the cross, which I just empathize with him on that"

"The spaghetti topic is soo yesterdecade, but apparently she remembers
it as well as having a very close relative pass away. Obviously I can
empathize with that; I still have my chip on the shoulder from Michael
Snyder banning me from the Game & Hobby Place and being soo still
unforgiving and closed-minded of accepting my apology. I even wish
heavily for the Place to be blown up and burn to the ground while there
was nobody inside."

I think Chris has noticed one of the flaws people point out about him the most is his complete lack of empathy so now Chris is trying to "prove" how empathetic he is by just throwing the word around whenever he can. Of course to Chris empathy means you redirect the subject to yourself and make it all about you. It seems like Chris just thinks if says he's empathetic then he is empathetic no matter how much he acts counter to the statement.

Good post, butt. That last example kills me in particular because you would think "very close relative pass away" would at least trigger Aunt Corinna as the topic for him to switch to, or maybe even poor zombie Patti-Chan, but neither "cook food for son and husband, who reject it" nor "somebody done died" have anything to do with "massive grudge against dang dirty store owner."

Yeah, this is a good point. What I find interesting about the last one in particular is that he doesn't bring up Bob's passing. Was this before then? Like, I find it incredulous to imagine that, after having Bob die and then being spoken to about death, he chooses to "empathize" with something so trivial that happened even before the death. It's not like this is a fresh wound.

He probably heard the word in HS, maybe in English or a "slow in the mind" class. He read that it is the capacity to recognize emotions that are being experienced by another person. He thought "Oh yeah! The capacity to know how I feel all the time!"

Yeah, this was before Bob died.

It's essentially like his relationship with "naïve." He's hears a word applied to him, judges whether or not it's positive or negative, and just starts throwing it right back at his enemies with utter abandon.

He's seen enough chick flicks to know girls love empathetic guys. He's just throwing out what a catch he is. Naturally, after claiming how empathetic he is he proceeds to ignore whatever the other person said and ramble on about how sad and horrible his stressful life is.

He claims to be empathetic, but deep down he knows it's not true. Actually no, he probably doesn't. Chris isn't particularly good at self-reflection.

I think Chris uses 'empathy' interchangeably with the natural definition of 'understand'. The irony being that he neither empathizes with nor understands anyone in a way that doesn't relate to him.

Funny enough, "naive" is one of the less negative words that can be used to describe Chris chan.

I think "stress" could count as one of his favorite words to use. I'm sure he heard it some time in his high school years or in one of the first sagas and he rolled with it.

And then sighed from it. (:_(

Chris empathy at work

He probably learned that "lack of empathy" is a common trait of autism and just wants to come off as not autistic (unless he can gain pity for it, of course, or a toy computer its involved)

^This. It doesn't seem to have become a big deal with him until the Calling Out videos...

[closes eyes and inhales through teeth] it's like I can feel the thorns that were drug-that were drudge, plowed through his hands and his feet! Thorn of crowns. Mm. Empathy is a powerful thing.

Chris showing his "empathy" by comparing himself (poorly) to GodJesus.

But that does not define me as an uncaring and cold-hearted person! I have empathy! I seek- I can see myself in other people's shoes and see how they would feel if I has- if I- with my responses into whatever situations.

Chris proving he's memorized (again, poorly) a dictionary definition.

Yay, Chris ruins English again. X3

At this rate, we may need to use a new language. I vote for interpretive dance.

Speaking of big boy words, I remember for the longest time Chris was using the word "individual(s)" a lot in his videos. Always reminded me how 5th graders learn that word and then try to use it every chance they get.

The biggest qualification of empathy is the ability to put your own problems on the back burner, and actually focus your efforts on another person's problems for a while.

Chris can't do this, nor has he ever attempted. Chris claims he's empathic because he is always moving the goalposts: He'll say he'll show some empathy as soon as his own issues aren't so terrible. Well, Chris's problems are always terrible, he lives in a perpetual state of crisis mode. He always feels justified in saying that no one else's problems will ever surpass his own in priority. But he wants you to give him credit for what he hypothetically would do for others if he felt like it.

Kinda like Chris and jogging: he doesn't jog five miles a day, but what's important-and what he should be lauded for-is that he can, if he ever felt like it.

Or that he would if he could, so you should praise him for it. Even though the only reason he can't is because he doesn't work to it.

I think that's the main reason why he doesn't get a job too, is because he's proven that he can and has in the past and thus feels justified in playing video games and eating TV dinners every day. He doesn't understand that having the capacity to do something and actually doing it are two different things.
