I revisited that photo too. The age fits the timeline (c. 2013), but the thing that threw me off was the eye colour; young Ethan appears to have noticeably lighter coloured eyes than older Ethan. That said, the lighting in the more recent photo isn't fantastic.

TBH this raises more questions than answers.

Not necessarily. IIRC the article was written around the time of July school holidays. The weather is usually shit in Adelaide and nice in SEQ. Plenty of kids go and visit interstate cousins during the hols. As for "Ethan Patton" vs Ethan Gluis, maybe Ethan decided to give his middle name instead of his last name so as to avoid weirdos trying to hit him up on social media.

That said, I'm still leaning towards the name Ethan Patton being an unfortunate coincidence.

Yeah, I think the kid is just a coincidence. Patton isn't an uncommon last name, and Ethan is a common first name. Gluis, on the other hand, I had genuinely never heard of before Ethan was on my radar. Must be pretty rare!

Gluis appears to be an old name in South Australia, but not one of those Adelaide names that screams "old money". The first reference I could find to Gluis in South Australia dates back to the South Australian Government Gazette of 6 July 1866, a Mr. John Gluis who appeared to be from Kadina, a town approximately 2 hours away from Adelaide [ original | archive ].

For those unfamiliar, the Government Gazette is an official publication for the purpose of notifying the actions and decisions of the government. They've been an official source of government decisions since Australia was just a bunch of British penal colonies with a free settlers colony stuck in the middle.
